C3 1.6 HDI won't rev past 2200
Hi guys,
I'm a Citroen newbie so please be gentle.
Firstly, it looks like a really good forum and I've enjoyed looking around.
I've just bought a C3 and it seems a really nice little car, however, driving along is fine, but it won't rev past 2200 and under load (going up hill) it throws out loads of black smoke and it really struggles.
There's no engine light or anything showing... I'm reasonably car minded but thought that here might be the best place to start!
Thanks very much

It's from 2005, just in case that's relevant - thanks.

Welcome to the FCF
We are always gentle ... Well, mostly
Presumably from looking on the forum you are aware of the problems that beset the 1.6 HDi
Easy steps first, check the air filter isn't clogged. Then the fuel filter.

Thanks for the fast reply. I'll get the local garage to have a check for me as I'm a bit short of time today.

We've only just got it.
Re: C3 1.6 HDI won't rev past 2200
Right the local garage had a look at it for me and said that the EGR was showing a fault and they've cleaned it out and it might be resolved. They said that the turbo is making a hell of a racket and that it and the afm might be gone?
They said that the air filter looked fine and I need to check if they've looked at the fuel filter...

Re: C3 1.6 HDI won't rev past 2200
They didn't look at the fuel filter - they said it looked pretty new and the fault code was 1351...?

You might want to have a look through these posts (then again, you might not!).

I know. I fervently hope you don NOT have this problem. What made post them up was the reference to the noisy turbo.

Re: C3 1.6 HDI won't rev past 2200
Is there any other way to identify that it is the turbo aside from the noise? There's no smoke etc. Also - after a very quick look on the bay of E, is it much extra work to just change the turbo cartridge or is it better to replace the whole thing? Any recommended suppliers etc?
Thanks again
Thanks again

Sorry, I wouldn't know. If Lighty sees this post I have no doubt he will be able to offer good advice. The only reason I was aware of this problem is because my van has a 1.6HDi engine, and I noticed the posts.

Re: C3 1.6 HDI won't rev past 2200
Has it got an Intercooler next to the Radiator???
If so, remove it, and see if its full of oil!!
I know from experiance. If the turbo had blown the oil level in the engine drops and it gets dumped in the intercooler, and thus restricts air flow!
My sisters C4 has just blown its turbo, and it had trouble revving past 3k, when Ive come to do the work, the intercooler was full of the missing engine oil.
A Turbo replacment though, is NOT JUST the Turbo swap, to gaurentee them you need to strip them all down and clear all Carbon soot from the EGR system, stop and injector leakage, etc etc. Its a PITA. Actual turbo swap is about 2 hrs MAX to do.

Having done the turbo on a Focus, before Xmas, with the same engine, I can definitely vouch for the above. Changing the turbo is the easy part.citroenxm wrote:A Turbo replacment though, is NOT JUST the Turbo swap, to gaurentee them you need to strip them all down and clear all Carbon soot from the EGR system, stop and injector leakage, etc etc. Its a PITA.
