Xanita estate Mk2 1.9td Speedo issues

Post by falling-out-with-my-car »

Hi,
I am having some issues with my 1998 1.9TD estate Xantia speedo.
it is according to my sat Naff reading 10miles per hour below what it should be
any ideas please?
Maybe there is some sort of sensor that might need replacing somewhere.

Can somebody please also confirm if this will affect the upcoming MOT?

Many thanks in advance

regards

Nigel.

Just to confirm, the Sat Nav says you are doing 70MPH, but the speedo shows 60MPH?

Nigel,

I beleve the speedos are purposly SET to read fast!My HDi reads fast, thus meaning Id not having issues with speeding, or shouldn't have.

We assume you have the exact correct size tyres fitted to your car?

I think if you change the sensor, you will get the same readings

Won't fail for that - speedo fail is only if 'obviously defective' ie it reads 100mph stationary, or as soon as you move off, or if the needle has fallen off. Mine has never been any good since I've had it - has a mind of its own, and likes to read 50mph at any speed between 30 and 70!

Richard,

Thats ALSO a faulty sensor that causes that... I had one do this, swapped the sensor and it was fine, unless you really have confirmed and swapped the sensor to still have the funny readings in which case it can only be the speedo meter itself.

Yes to confirm sat Nav says 70mph and speedo says 60 mph
This sensor where abouts is it please and does it have a special name please?
I'd like to see if I can fix it. when in a 30mph limit with speed cameras present its getting a pain in the neck.
cheers Nigel

Ahhh Nigel, its under reading ok, then that is a worry, they are meant to over read.

Theres little too see. The sensor is on top of the Diff house.

Put car UP ON RAMPS...

Lie under the car looking up..

The drivers drive shaft goes into the Diff, and above there, there will be a Silver heat plate, OR should be. The sensor is behind there, with a 3 pin plug in it. Its secured by one 10mm nut.. unplug the sensor plug, remove the one nut, and it then needs weening out, the sensor seal O ring can be tight in the housing..

The sensor looks like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-XANTI ... 4acd8cfa76" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Drive Cog fits in the bottom, and just pulls out easilly..

also if you have the jacked up at the front you might get coated in gear oil as you pull the transducer/sensor out,
so firstly dont lay directly under/inline with the diff, and have a tray to hand, just in case,

i think why these sensors play up is the O ring fails which then allows hulio into the electronics,

i have in the passed dismantled one of these cleaned it ooot, re/fitted with suck seed whoooops ( thats what my Parrot does ) i mean successes,

Before you go getting oily Nigel, what is the odometer doing? If this is reading correctly, then it is not a problem with the sensor, but with the speedo head (my guess as to where the fault lies in fact). Mine is deffo the speedo head, the odo reads fine, and always has done, but the needle is erractic at times (oddly, very bad this morning!). You can take the speedo out and clean the contacts in side, but I've never got round to it, I just rely on the rev counter instead. Not sure on the 1.9TD, but pretty sure on the HDi you can see the speed input to the ECU if you get it on a Lexia, so you might be able to check it that way.

The instruments have been out twice in the past year once to replace the Matrix and again to silence an ABS Bulb when the car doesn't have ABS. I am beginning to wonder if the removal of the ABS bulb affected the speedo calibration somehow?

All speedos are required by the Vehicle Construction and Use Regulations to over-read; +10 to -0% upto around 2003, +5% to -0% thereafter. There has to be a tolerance to deal with the variation in rolling radius caused by tyre wear, wheel/tyre options (195/65x15 and 205/60x15) and even different makes of tyre.

It's actually "not more than 110% of the true vehicle speed + 6.25mph " , so, in theory you could be doing 50mph and have a speedo reading of 61.25mph and not be breaking any regulations. The act has been amended and is now a European reg.

Over read guy yes. But nigel's is under reading by 10mph so it's the wrong side of inaccurate. .

if the statutory regs were changed in 2003 this would also not apply to my speedo. vechicle registered in 1998.
The rev counter is fine so I'm just guessing but I reckon the speedo is a duffen.

I have decided to leave it alone and buy one of these Used.
http://www.he-mandualcontrols.co.uk/gps.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The car has been in a garage in 2013 for repairs for a total of four months and I'm not prepared to let it go for another
Month this year I would like to drive it this year, so the heads up speedo display seems to be a good bet and they are
Risk assessed and approved by the Driving Standards Regulation Directorate, also the Public & Commercial services Union as acceptable for use during driving tuition and driving tests. They can be calibrated manually so I shall set it slightly faster than my Sat Nav reading.

I am also fitting new tyres all round from http://www.valuetyres.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I have let my tyres wear down quite a lot.
I have found some 185/65/R15's for £31 each plus postage four tyres comes to £135.00 Not bad really.
fitting & disposal is £7.50 at a local part worn supplier. so £165 for four new treads fitted.
and to think I was always buying part worn tyres at £20 each plus fitting.

Tyre Purchase Details:
Product Qty 4. Primewell Budget Tyres.
