Citroen Xantia Brake Valve Availibility

Post by tractorman »

Hi, I hoping some clever people on here can help me....

I'm sure plenty of you will know of JCB, but many won't know that we also make a high speed farm tractor called the Fastrac. We have been making tractors for 20+ years now, they are high speed, full suspension, ABS disc brakes like trucks, and much more. The rear suspension on the tractor was based on that of the Citroen, hydro-pneumatic system, using Citroen parts. We also used some Citroen parts in the braking system, specifically the power brake valve, operated by the brake pedal. The use of Citroen parts has long since gone, but of course we still have to service our existing customers with parts.

We have recently come accross an issue where Citroen (or their tier 1 supplier) has stopped making the power brake valve available for the aftermarket and we are slowly running out of service parts :( To update the tractor with a different valve becomes a big job, partly as it stopped production 17 odd years ago!

The valve in question is (was) used on the Citroen Xantia, of the early 90's. I'm sure variants were used on other models. We believe its production run was around 1993 to 2001. Our tractor production with this valve was 1995/6, as the braking was soon updated with a different system. We also heard a rumour that the Xantia continued production in Iran until quite recently, we wonder what brake valves were used on that ??

There must be 1000's of Xantia's still around and we are convinced somebody somewhere must be making the power brake valve for aftermarket use, but were struggling to identify a source. I've put a few pictures of the valve in question and we have a few part numbers which may help.

Any information may help us in our search....

Hello, welcome to the Forum. You pose a rather different question to usual :)

I can't help you directly, except to say that there are (alas) no longer 1,000s of Xantias about, as many have reached the age and condition where it's no longer been economic to keep them on the road, so they've been scrapped.

I expect others with more knowledge of the hydraulic Citroens to reply to you in more detail in due course. Good luck in your quest.

hi and welcome

it depends on what parts you actually are requiring,

on service citroen it shows the complete brake doseur valve is NFP = no longer available ( from citroen anyway )

although here is a list of price and part No.'s for all the seals required from Citroen to overhaul a doseur valve

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
5424455 CNTRL-UNIT RING 3.88 GBP 4.66 GBP 4.66 GBP

95640067 BRAKE PROTECTOR 7.18 GBP 8.62 GBP 8.62 GBP

the above two are the protector cap ( usual failure point ) and its retaining ring

all the below are internal O rings

95495759 CNTRL-UNIT SEAL 1.66 GBP 1.99 GBP 1.99 GBP

95638813 BRAKE O-RING 1.95 GBP 2.34 GBP 2.34 GBP

7903065984 BRAKE O-RING 1.04 GBP 1.25 GBP 1.25 GBP

all of the part above are still available from Citroen

there is a guy in the UK that overhauls Citroen hydraulic component

Hi tractorman,

Citroen specialists Wolsey House Motors (http://www.whm.hexpek.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) in Norfolk has offered these brake valves for sale in the past, presumably recovered from cars they have scrapped.
As Malcolm says above, faults on the valve can usually be sorted by a seal kit overhaul. Perishing of the end rubber button/cap is a common failure.
The Citroen workshop manual overhaul procedure is available if you do not already have it.

Thanks all for the replies so far. At present our Service people only offer a complete valve to our dealers, which is clearly not ideal. My first comment to my Service colleagues was wether a seal kit is available, looks like it is so we can look into that. I'm sure people repairing this age of tractor would try and repair the valve rather than replace it. We could look to offer a service exchange to try and conserve a bit of stock.

Hope we've been of some help. Good luck your quest. Maybe service exchange is the way to go, perhaps the only way

Tractorman
Martin and his colleagues at Plaides are the independent Citroen hydraulic specialists. May I suggest a mutually beneficial solution: a modest purchase schedule for reconditioned 'Doseur' valves from JCB should give Plaides some purchasing 'clout' should seals become unavailable from Citroen and would make it viable for Plaides to keep a stock of recon Doseurs available for Xantia owners like me. The same would apply to other Xantia hydraulic parts.

I scrapped about 3 Xantias last year, but kept the brake valves from ALL of them,

Incidentally this type of valve is a Citroen only type part UP TO 2000.

Models after 2000 changed to a Servo Type braking system. However as above seals kits are probably the best way to go, they are reliable units, mainly just the rubber end failing.

The brake valve also used on the XM, BX, CX.. though Im not 100% positive if the BX and CX are the same but its likely as the same suspesnion set up was used.

XM brake valves same as Xantia, but only mentioning this incase you were scrap yard searching and came across one to salvage a brake valve.
