Post by Timmo »

The Ol' Rattle bus has just had its Yearly failure sheet test done,
the most serious of the fails was the rear pipe bursting during the test, other than that is a small patch of welding, a rear wheel bearing and a seatbelt!

now, could i ask for the help of the collective over the part i need, its the Curly wurly pipe that has gone by the looks of it, and the other side is corroded too and as an advisory, Are they 5270 A2+3 on Service citroen??

Pleiades should be able sort you out with a replacement pipe 01487 831239. He's a Citroen hydraulic specialist.

Don't even think about trying to fit an OE steel pipe in there - one side must just be doable - the other is impossible without removing all the anti sink gear!! Get Martin at Plaeides to make you up a pipe, then use the old one as a guide to shape the new one. You will need to recover the clamp off the old one from the inboard end of the spiral - drill out the rivets, and then fit it to the new pipe with some small bolts. Cut the old pipes off above the calipers, as this allows the use of a ring spanner on the nipple - plenty of plus gas and heat required! You will also need to extract the bleed nipples, but again, heat, plus gas and ring spanner will see them out. You can confirm it is the spiral, as that is the brake pipe, so will only leak when the brake is pressed!

Had one go on mine - didn't even notice any drop in brake performance, only knew as my colleague I lift shared with phoned up and said "Oi, your car's leaked oil all over my drive!"

i havent done a Xant curly pipe as yet, but have done plenty on BX's, is it really that difficult to fit steel curlies to a Xant, more so than a BX????

i would still prefer steel curly pipes, as although there are a lot of people on here say copper are fine coiled,
i still dont feel they would spring back to shape as steelies do

Did mine 4 years ago. If I remember not that bad a job although the price for the pair was £101.48 from the dealer for a 2.0HDi with Hydractive. The most difficult bit was getting the pipe to clip in and stay in the white plastic bit on the suspension arm. They still don't sit right to this day.

The part numbers you have quoted above are for the pipes to the rear suspension, the curly pipes are for the brakes and should, I believe, be 4885E1 and 4885E2 for your car assuming you have ABS but no hydractive, which are shown as £33.14 and £51.61 (incl VAT) respectively on Service Citroen.

Thanks Rory,
I had discovered the different part numbers, have found them for 75 delivered from a french place via an Hour of googling part numbers, so think i'll go for that!
Is it really as bad a job as hinted at??

Every Xantia I've seen binned, has had a set of these pipes, negligibly corroded. By UK standards, looking less than two years old.

High time to start selling bits back to the UK!
