Hold the end of the broomstick handle against different parts of the engine, to identify the source of the noise (I don't find it's always 100% successful). If you don't have a suitable broom handle readily to hand, then, as I do, use a large screwdriver.

I've even tried using a hammer, with the metal end applied to ear. The hammer is then to hand if you find what needs fixing :rofl2:

The reference to Xantia may refer back to my comment that maybe the number of Xantia posts is now being being overtaken by posts about C5s.

I hope the knocking turns out not to be too serious/costly

I sympathise with you Boris, your chances of diagnosing this without doing some close examination are I'm afraid pretty low. see my post here:

Now I've been on the spanners professionally for over sixty years and I'm damned if I can decide what the noise is without taking the engine apart to some extent, sounds like a big end to me but............

Went to usual garage. The guy is very good and I have always trusted him. Anyway he straightaway said mass fly wheel. It reduces on revving and there is vibration in clutch pedal.

So £460ish (I forgot) for parts and £290+vat for labour (5hrs).

To be honest at end of tether. Just wasted a couple of grand.

Can't afford it. So looks like bus from now on for a few years anyway.

The dual mass flywheels do seem to cause a lot of grief when they quit (and I don't just mean cost). It might be worth checking to see if they do a solid flywheel conversion for your C5. Can't speak for the cost, though.

Sorry to hear that Boris, if diagnosis is correct (but I'd consider better than a big-end gone). Car's still worth something, whether you fix it and resell, or sell as is. Hope another option turns up for you.

Just did search for C5 solid flywheel kit, and this is what I found. Hope it helps;

Good luck, anyway.

Not sure what "better than a big end gone" means.

Thanks guys. Not sure about Ebay. Would worry aboit fakes.

The one quoted was from LUK (?) There was another but that was £350.

Re solid flywheel kit. Would that not cause problems?

Chris (citroenmad) had a replacement solid flywheel kit added to one of his.

Big end would be an engine-out job.

Understood about e-bay concerns, but neither ECP or GSF had anything about solid flywheel kits.

Guy in garage mentioned kit. But there may be problems with it sheering crankshaft (!?) I think amongst other things. He said the manufacturers say no and that they say fuel efficiency is crappy with on but then again the oem manufacturers still make the kits.

Thng is would it be cheaper?

Best to ask Chris, as he has experience of them. I just did a search for the kit. It isn't something that would concern me, as Gracie has a solid flywheel. However, at a guess I would go for the full kit, as you would be getting into the clutch area anyway to replace the flywheel. If Valeo and LUK are doing them (assuming they are not copies), then I doubt there are any long term issues to worry about.

The thing is to look at it long term. It might well cost £700 all in, but if it lasts for 5 years that is £13 per month. Mind you, just after Christmas we all are a bit skint!

Further digging has found this;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SOLID-FLYWHEE ... 53efe6fa27" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and, assuming it is legit (the vendor seems to have a high feedback score) it could help you get back and mobile.

If you had the option of dual mass or solid what would be the advice?
