That's more of a rattle, if its a sharp knock like a petrol engine pinking its probably an injector problem, can sound like a big end, but its usually only on one cylinder.

To be honest, the 138 bhp 16 valve engine doesn't suffer from crank pulley failure that often.
Dual mass flywheel is quite a common cause of a knock, it can also come & go, does use of the clutch alter the noise ?

Well, it's not diesel knock, I know that much. That's higher pitched, more metallic sounding.

I would agree, there is a slight tap which sounds like a tappet but I wouldn't worry overly about that, the low frequency rattle sounds as though is coming from the aux belt area, could be the crankshaft pulley or the tensioner. Look at the tensioner with the engine running and see if its turning smoothly, not jumping up and down, if it is, could be that the belt has stretched. If not that watch the other pulleys carefully for any random misalignment.

I know nothing about these. Other than the belt on the alternator (I don't even know what thats called and the timing belt, which you can't see) I have no idea where all the belts are nor the ability to lift car or otherwise. It's parked on street. So new car will be in garage. Woohoo!

Can I drive it? To garage. Without too much risk?

Yes it sounds OK to drive. The aux belt is the one that drives the alternator among other things.

Just had a thought what with questuions re undertrays etc. This knocking was not evident until I had undertray problems. I noticed it immediately after I fixed the side trays up. Never heard it prior. Just wondering if something has been damaged or knocked when the undertray disintegrated.

Haven't looked at car much since taking video. It's Christmas and want to relax. But that was a thought. Bit of a coincindence that it occurs now.

Then again I do tend to read too much into thjings sometimes.

So garage here I come after new year.

Hi Boris,

Here's hoping your visit to the garage in the New Year is not too expensive.

Totally off-topic, but I was briefly in Arbroath last summer, and very much enjoyed some Arbroath Smokies :-D :-D

Ah Lexi,

As one person said, "We're DOOOOOMED" - :-D Have you noticed how the number of posts about Xantiae are being overtaken by C5s?
