Miy TD has the grey 3-pin plug & socket fixed to the top of the gearbox. My rev counter usually works, but ceases to work at random times, for varying periods. I've given up trying to trace exactly where the problem lies :(

It will be the sensor for a couple of reasons..

Firstly they are magnetic, and also the end of the sensor gets crapped up with gunge and oil etc... and being magnetic may pick up magnetic swarf..

If you remove the sensor out , clean the end up and then push it back in BUT BE WARNED!! When pushing back in DO NOT push all the way back in!! What I do, is I start the engine, then i lightly tap it back in till the rev counter wakes up then a little bit more, then nip the plastic clamp back up

Thanks Paul, have tried removing the sensor and cleaning it up. Refitted it with 12 thou clearance from flywheel and it seemed to improve things for a while, but it then reverted to misbehaving again. Thought it might be the cable connection into the sensor, which is all sealed up, but barring a direct substitute, unsure how to prove this. Not sure if a continuity test would be a suitable

The connection breaks down with engine heat and replacement is therefore needed...

Hmmm - thanks Paul. It's a pretty hot environment where the sensor's located, so that sounds very plausible. I'll have a word with a friend who's just given a TD to a friend for parts/scrap. Guess mine had had enough with the mileage it's done (now on 186k, but yes I know I can't match your 110 :))

Thanks folks - I'll have a look at it.

Basically the symptoms are that instead of pointing to the rpm reading on the dial it waves around the approximate rpm and sometimes chucks it altogether and goes back to zero. Once in a blue moon it reads fine though..
