HELP!! Xantia TD Gear Selector Rods fell off!

Post by ecohouse1 »

Driving to work in the storm yesterday and my usually trusty Xantia throws a wobbler and the gear stick goes totally loose in my hand and am stuck in first. Luckily only a mile from home so limped back and forced the 2CV into service against its will plus its freezing!!

Checked out the situ last night and the big rod from the gear stick has come off the big pivot ball mounted on the subframe, and one of the small link rods has come off the gearbox - notice the nylon bush is still attached to the gearbox!

Couple of questions, the big long rod from the gear lever in the car, that goes to the subframe - is there a bush inside the tube at the end of the rod, that the ball on the swivel/idler,goes into? If that makes sense

Does anyone know of a good supplier for these rods? Reckon I will replace all of them as they must be getting worn.

Trust it to be at the coldest time of year!!!

Cheers

Alan

If memory serves replacement rods aren't that expensive from the stealers, but then I bought mine a couple of years ago. The new ones have a push to release button on them which is handy.
Also I'm pretty sure he ball on the end of the rod just goes in the ring/tube, I don't recall seeing a bush in there on Cassy.

Yes, not too expensive from the stealers. I've picked up OE items on ebay for a bit less if you know the part number you want. An 11mm spanner placed under the ball of the rod is good for levering it off (as Xac says the new ones are a better design and have a release button). Likely big ball thingy will relocate once you have hooked up the replacement rods. All in all not too difficult a job.

Thanks for that. I assume then that when the smaller rods, once attached, will hold the large rod in place with the ball inside?

She's done 115k miles so I have to suspect they are worn, I gave them a good spray with spray grease last weekend and wondering if that's hastened the failure? I usually keep them well lubed.

Nah, it's age and use that kills them, with a sprinkling of iffy clutch use when changing gears. Chances are the others will be fine and yes the rods hold the ball in the ring, so make sure you align it with the ring first before connecting the rods!
Cassy's went when in order to get home one day I had to shorten the throttle cable meaning she didn't want to do under 2000rpm. I'd done fine all the way from Staines to a couple of miles from home with timing junctions right until some git at a roundabout decided that even though there was no other car in sight he had to stop and count to ten before proceedeing. I had to go into neutral and when I tried to get it back into gear there was a bang as one of the rods popped off and the gearstick went floppy.

I usually reassemble them with a zip tie in a kind of figure eight shape, these last upwards of 20,000 miles, the big ball in the crossmember is a sloppy fit, there is nothing missing.

Thanks Lads, I actually ordered the set of 3 from Neat Autos - £45 delivered. Its one of the small ones that broke. Get the Xantia back on the road again. The little 2CV got a new lease of life yesterday with a freshly charged battery and I realised that the reason it was so frigging cold in the car last week was that the roof was not clipped back on properly at the end of the summer so that air was coming in between the top of the windscreen and the roof - howling gale it was at it was -1 outside. :-D

Fitted the new rods - well to 2 small ones. they were sods to fit. Needed moles to squeeze them on to the ball studs. Found the lower one easier from underneath and the top one from above with the air cleaner removed. Gear change is much "notchier" like a rifle bolt!! I didnt realise how sloppy the old ones had got!

Well, the harder they are to assemble, the less likely they are to pop off again :)
