slightly overfilled engine oil

Post by aneesh84 »

I accidentally overfilled the engine oil on my Xantia 2.0 HDI.

The oil level is 2-3 milimetres above the max line on the dip stick. Are the levels very strict?

Will it be okay to keep it like this for the next 10000 kms when i will be going for the next oil change?

Don't worry about it. An overfill like that is minimal.

I suspect there is an amount of caution in the maximum mark and being a slight amount over should not harm, as Mike says. You might find it drops slightly anyway.

It would vary more than that on the road due to the camber no doubt, plus which way your car is facing if its slightly sloped.

My XUDT 205 used to read a few above or a few below max depending on which way it was facing etc. Mind you, the rear main seal does provide an escape point on some

Not like the woman in the BMW i saw at a garage. I was paying for my fuel when she come in and asked if they had any more oil, she had put 4 litres in and it "wasn't full yet." I was tempted to let her get on with it but i did the right thing and dipped the car to see how much oil was in it, the dipstick was 4 inches over max! I told her to call out the RAC and not start it or it would do serious damage.

I checked today, it went below the max mark by itself :-)

And I didnt spot any oil leaks.
