C5 MOT questions

Post by jgra1 »

chaps, got the MOT tomorrow,,, was positive about it until I popped head under rear of car tonight..

literally in the last 24 hours. the end of the mid section of the exhaust has shown itself to be rotten.. this is the main section with the cat in..

first question : is this part of the system the same as the estate car? as there is a breaker in the town I work in..

The next question, the boots that protect the rear ?rams.. both are split.. are they a pain the change? expensive etc?

finally , there is a metal bracket bolted to each of the rear arms. the bracket holds the ABS sensor cable I think.. The holes are long since neglected, I have no idea what would have screwed in? any thoughts? no threads visible,, its possible the the previous bolts have snapped off years ago, hard to tell.. I zip-tied around the rear arms in the hope the mot guy will be happy,..

more no doubt in 24 hours..
tyres good.. lights work.. no warning lights.. doors now open from inside and out! .. glass ok.. new fuel, air and pollen filter in last few days., oil and filter in spring..

service citroen shows a pop rivet for securing the ABS sensor bracket to the arm

I would suggest that you get some Simoniz "Very High Temperature Paint", for exhausts and manifolds. According to the blurb it can handle up to 800C (well, the black and silver can), and could help protect the exhaust from rust.

i would be very cautious of buying anything from that bunch, be very lucky if it lasts a year IMO,

also most exhaust parts rust away from the inside out

Looks like there's a repair pipe for the exhaust John - I've got one on my Xantia - cost <£30 from the local factors, and relatively easily fitted. I think as Micky says, if there is no leak, then you will just get an advisory - which is just as well, as changing it requires removing the pin in the end of the ram which can be a right PITA!!

thanks all.. interesting Micky..

Richard, yep saw that pin.. didn't like it much...

tell me more about the repair pipe Rich? is it a straight through catless? Had that on my xant if so.. would be ideal..

Hellrazor.. the end of pipe, just before/where it joins back box, is showing daylight around over 180 degrees.. its gone for sure. rest of pipe and cat probably still very serviceable :( .. not even sure cat does much on an 8V Hdi ?

It's a cat-back repair pipe - you cut the existing pipe after the cat and then slip the repair pipe over it and clamp it up. I was able to cut 90% of the way through with the grinder, then finish it off with a hack saw with the pipe on the car (if the C5 is anything like the Xantia getting the front pipe off is a dog of a job!). There are also repair clamps available on e-bay - Simon bought one to help repair his V6, although we didn't use most of it in the end.

i think with the later new rules for MOT all rubbers must be in intact condition,

cant you just weld the neck back to the box John????

also wasnt there something about pussies missing being a fail if they were originally fitted from the factory,
i presume this will be after a certain date/reg/year onwards

Malc

A harsh tester could I suppose fail it on:

1. A suspension unit or accumulator :
b. damaged or deteriorated so that it is likely to fail

But I think if no leak then you should get away with it.

Re cats - only required on spark ignition engines - there is nothing about compression igntion engines. Yet!

hi all, thanls
Rich, whilst cycling from the MOT just now I was imagining a reapair like that,, that will work a treat.

Malcolm. just asked mot'er and he confirmed he wouldn't be able to pass unless the exhaust had the cat in...

the boots.. hmm.. will know more at 2pm.. car has been brilliant for a year and a half.. but paying for it now I fear.. a service, an mot and a cold start fault are adding up.. don't get something for nothing ;)

I think Major Exhaust Leak will be drummed out the regiment by Corporal Repair.
