ZX 1.9D Rear Brakes

Post by caspar »

Hi
The ZX rear brakes are leaking, need new shoes and cylinders.
Think i've identified them as Bendix (see pic) but am a little confused about the wheel cylinders.

Image

Carparts4less list Bendix, CRCI with integrated regulator for £13.50 each or Bendix (presumably without integrated regulator) for £5.99 each, both suitable for 1992 car.
Which do I need?
Thanks for any help.

Although I cannot help directly, a useful bit of information (to those who can help) would be the VIN number of your car. That way they will be able to look up what your car had when she came out of the factory.

one of the sales men at my local GSF always identifies which cylinder is which, he asks me if the part of the cylindder that protrudes through the back plate is round or oval,
and if the pipe and nipple are directly above each other this points to being Bendix and the cylinders are not handed,

the other type brand of cylinder the nipple and pipe are one behind the other, this type is handed,

it might pay to inquire with GSF as they do a complete overhaul kit/set, which comes with both cylinders, set of shoes and the adjuster mechanism, ready to fit to the back plate,

the set we bought for my daughter Synergie cost around £70

when the adjuster kit on its own ( dealer only ) was £160,

the other thing to look for is if the tinny stainless steel pawl/blade is still in place against the ratchet wheel of the adjuster mechanism, as it is more often missing, it is required as it stops the adjuster unwinding,

you cant buy the paw on uts own, and as i say above, the adjuster kit on its own is dealer only at a price usually fro the likes of the ZX its around £60

The only way to tell is by looking at them. The vin won't help, nor will knowing who manufactured the other brake components on the car. This should help:

Easy to get wrong as I did with Sylvia's ZX. Problem is I did hers just over 5 months ago and cannot remember which is which.

Malc's right though.

I have a genuine one available here. Again, cannot remember which it is though.

the other point to know is the adjuster threads are handed one left hand and one right hand thread,

if place the wrong side of the car this will throw the tiny stainless steel pawl/blade out, as the ratchet will be trying to rotate the wrong direction,

im 99% certain the Bendix cylinders are the non handed with the round mount/base, and nipple directly above the pipe port

although it twas not i suggested the VIN would help identify the correct parts,
i do belive it should,

so i think we should run a book on which parts are required  [-o< ,
if the OP ( caspar ) would post the last 8 digits of the cars chassis/VON No. i will check which type the orical states :-D

Perhaps the RP# would narrow it down?

My experience of ZXs , well, it could have a different set on each side. Worst car ever for getting the right parts for from GSF!

ok Mike it just came up with the option of both brands as below

REAR BRAKE DRUM CALIPER CYL SHOE BENDIX
REAR BRAKE DRUM CALIPER CYL SHOE GIRLING

i am correct regarding the different brands of cylinder Bendix being not handed, and Girling being handed
myglaren wrote: Perhaps the RP# would narrow it down?
shouldnt do Steve as entering the VIN No. also gives the rp No. under characteristics

I seem to remember I had that problem with my ZX, ended up going to a Citroen dealer to get them.
