Brake wheel cylinder Xantia

Post by Hans »

I have just replaced the front brake disks and pads. But I had a hard time pushing the brake cylinder back into its housing. I eventually used a hammer. What is the normal procedure and is mine so heavy?
I am afraid I damaged the cylinder..

Hans,
I fear you have indeed damaged the caliper. The handbrake operates on the front wheels, and in order to 'reset' the self adjusting mechanism you must SCREW back in the cylinder. I suspect that you will have broken the handbrake mechanism, and you will find in a few hundred km's the handbrake will go out of adjustment and you will not be able to adjust it back in, and 2 new calipers will have to be fitted.
There are several small, but important, differences such as these on Citroens, and you are best advised to get hold of a workshop manual, in order to avoid damaging things unnecessarily!

Second that.
That's the devil when starting DIY work w/o special knowledge beforehand.
I strongly recommand you find a Haynes Xantia workshop manual. This is no doubt the best manuals existing for the DIY'er starting on a car model - that he does not know about.
I have to say that such problems are not special for Citroen cars.
Any make of car's have their own peculiarities.
There are good & valid excuses to make DIY mistakes - that's how you learn [;)]
But there are NO excuses to refuse seeking information [B)]
GSF stock these manuals :

Thanks!
I did read about it. Here in Holland I have a book called "vraagbaak Citroen xantia" by P.H. Olving, but they mentioned pushing back the cylinder (not turning) so faulty information!
