The head gaskets tend to fail on these engines at around 150k but otherwise they are a brilliant engine. Check around the filler cap for signs of dry antifreeze. Gently remove the pressure cap after you have driven it, there should be some pressure but it shouldn't blow the coolant out. Check that it has plenty of antifreeze, dip you finger in it, should taste sweet. Other than that drive it and see if it feels OK, if it does it probably is.

phoned them up they say they havernt got any service history and they want 100 pound deposit. They did say the oil had been changed recently. Bit worred about the rust and the wheel arch. Must be someone near there to have a look at it. Give its ratings

Not sure Peter, if Citroen sorted the head gasket issues by the time the 2,1 got to the Xantia.

Ive a feeling they had switched to Laminated gaskets by then... but I could be wrong though.

A bl00dy fortune is the correct answer.

Used to cost me £45 for 210 miles a week, driving sensibly back in 2010 in my Activa.

In the Xantia 110 HDi which replaced it, I could do the same week for £20.

Not on your nelly Paul. 28-30mpg at a steady 70mph cruise maybe. Around town 20-24 is more like it. Mine was actually less economical than my 256bhp Impreza.

It just needs a f*ckload of boost

Doesn't help fuel economy but it at least justifies the fuel cost (That's what I tell myself)
