SPOT THE XANTIA.

Post by lankytim »

Spotted today,

Image

I was in a scrapyard in Manchester today, collecting 21 tons of scrap aluminium and noticed this poor Xantia. The site is part of the "car takeback" scheme and while I was there several cars were driven in, a 52 reg Fiesta, 51 reg Skoda Fabia and an elderly Polo, many of the scrappers looked in really good nick! The cars are drained of fluids, stuck in the pile along with the Xantia and then shredded in a huge machine. The various metals are separated for recycling. The aluminium I collected consisted of mostly shattered engine blocks, cylinder heads, pistons, alternator cases e.t.c. They are all currently on their way to Felixtowe docks en-route to China for melting down and reuse.

Makes you think eh!

Car "Take Back" .. Whats that all about?

The xantia, bottom left, above the Escort, under the silver astra, from the grill was a 1995 - 1997 S1 with airbag model..

Have a look on youtube at the car shredders... scarey things.. Magnets then seperate the magnetic steel from the alloy.

Is china buying again? Scrap on the rise in price again?

Well spotted, but there's another Xantia in there!

So two Xantias

I do wonder, is it really more 'environmentally friendly' to scrap so many good used cars, sort, shred and melt the materials, then make a whole new car to replace it? Hmm, I very much doubt that ... keep an existing car going and it'll be far less energy demanding and polluting than that process.

But, that wouldn't make the world go round ...

Makes me sick!

The car take back is a scheme where you go online and arrange to have your expired car taken away and responsibly recycled, basically like a normal scrapyard but with more paperwork and BS green credentials. In this case no parts are removed for resale, they are just drained of fluids, tyres removed and then shredded.

I wasn't there long enough to see many cars driven in but apparently they have some really nice cars destroyed there. Many are part exchanges from local dealerships that are too old or need too much work to retail.

The S2 was an X reg, I couldn't tell any more than that.

There are thousands of cars that get scrapped every year, I guess you can't save them all!

Road salt and snobbery are the culprits.

And expense of replacing parts/repairs if you can't do them yourself. Fuel prices don't help, neither does expensive road tax and insurance.

The C5's next owner will be cartakeback.. to be fair to them, they did give £200 for RUNN when the gearbox gave up.

My next car will be no more than a year old, and it'll be Japanese.

I think you need to update your vehicle identification charts Malcolm, it's definitely a Mk5 Escort at the bottom of the pile

Why don't you see red Xantias very often? Because they're all on a slow boat to China to be turned into tin foil and razor blades!
