Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold - FIXED - NOT
car has been fine since I went to France last Saturday.. starting well every day..
Last thing I did was change the High pressure pump and then swap the fuel reg from old pump to new.,.
car was mostly laid up after France until yesterday .. another long trip to Somerset an back.. this morning.. break open the easy start..
so frustrating now.. car runs fine, and has eaten £700 in last 2 months.. more than I paid for it in the beginning..
I am guessing I have destroyed an HP pump, possibly with swarf .. but it really is just a guess,,
will try get lex on there soon to see what I can see
am toying with the idea of running a tube from intercooler pipe into car (with a stopper), so I can just spray in comfort lol..

but the car was surging with the (new) reg in Paul>? changing to the old one cured that, and the new pump cured the cold starting...
Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold - FIXED - NOT
tbh i think this is a visious circle as of whats happened to me..
hp pump seized on me and i think its due to the tank pump breaking down slowly...so replaced hp pump and not tank pump and i think the swarf has got to injectors and buggered them..but saying that im still no wiser to why it wont go it seams to be the injectors to me as its the next thing to fail...am in process of getting some this week fingers crossed and a new battery but from what i can say the car has done 200k+ so if they were origional injectors they have done well
john i would say maybe do a leak off test from injectors theres a few videos on you tube that are very good and it just might show you something that could be happening
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
theres a link for you to get started
dont forget we are dealing with very technical engines..be proud

.. is there a way to test the two regs I have.. they definitely seem to be related to my starting problems but as ever I am still clutching straws..

Hmmm... theres a tiny rubber seal and a nylon ring on the end of the regulator shaft. These dont always survive a removal from the pump...

hmm ok Paul...
I did seem to fix the problem there though, for a week I could start the car everyday as normal, first time since September,,
tempted to try the other reg back in there now.. I haven't much left to lose really

John.
Have you changed the "Glow Plug Control" box... apparently it is also known as the "Cold Start Box" ...
I beleve it has a lot to do with cold starting and only works under a certain temp, as you seem to be having various starting times depending on outside temperture..

no Paul.. very interesting though..
I did measure power getting to the glow plugs, even on days when she wouldn't start, back in oct.,. ?

Forgive me if I have missed something but this thread was too long for my concentration span. Most of the readings above say to me that the starter is lazy (I think you already swapped the battery). At a cranking speed of 200rpm it is very borderline whither the 2.0l 8valve hdi will start. I can also confirm that the glow plugs are not necessary to fire it up unless the temperatures are well sub zero. the starter is an easy swap.
Just noticed astramanmazdaman's post. I agree with him. Min 200Bar and about 250RPM required to start. The faster the cranking speed the higher the pressure and the quicker it builds so less cranking time
