Picasso 2.0L hdi 2002 won't start

Post by dbX »

Hi, I have the above motor bought from a friend as a non runner. He's had poor starting for a while, but now it won't start. The RAC man says it's the High Pressure pump. Before I replace this I am checking other options to clarify.
I have fitted new fuel filter. Air filter is like new.
I can hear the primer pump running for 2/3 secs, and also proved fuel is getting to filter by disconnecting pipe with primer running.
I have had the crank sensor out which measure 470 Ohms, so I presume it's ok as I'm getting a reading.
I have had cam sensor out which measures 38k ohms on outer 2 pins so presume ok.
Brake lights are working so presume switch is ok.

When left for 5 mins if you try start it, it does sometimes fire but then dies again.

This motor only has 85000 miles showing and has been regulary serviced.

My code reader picked up P0560 system voltage (presumably flat battery from trying it) & also P0230 fuel pump primary circuit. But the primer seems ok to me.

Anyone any other ideas before i change the High pressure pump? Is it common these pumps go?

Thanks, Dawson

I had to replace the HP pump on my C5 but it had done about 190k, the initial symptoms were that the engine would 'hunt' when you first started it, then it stopped doing that but got progressively more difficult to start, you could start it eventually but once it was hot it was almost impossible. I changed the pressure sensor to no effect so had to bite the bullet and change the pump. I got one off ebay for about £55.00.

High mileage is not necessarily the cause as my 406 has done about 215k and still starts perfectly, it seems that some wear and some don't.

Did you have to code the pump once fitted?

Nope, just fitted it and away it went. That's one of the great things about these 8 valve engines.

Hi Eddy,
I was thinking of trying that because previous owner said it used to. If it does will that rule out the pump?

Unfortunately not, when the pump wears it doesn't build up sufficient pressure for the ECU to open the injectors, if you turn it over faster it can, still doesn't necessarily mean it is though. You can get them quite cheaply on ebay, I think I paid about £55.00 for mine.

Hi Peter, Thanks for advice. I will source another pump and fit it.

I can't guarantee that will cure it but its worth a try, you will need a new cam belt and I would change the water pump while its off. I believe that all the 8 valve pumps are the same except that there may be two different makes so make sure you get the right one.

Hi Peter, I'm pretty sure it's the pump. Mine is a Bosch pump, so as long as I get a Bosch off the same model i should be alright? Or do I have to worry about serial numbers too?

Thanks, Dawson

As long as its a Bosch I don't think it necessarily has to come from the same model, I believe they are standard across the range.

Ok, I've got one ordered off ebay, £50 delivered, same serial number as mine. I'll let you know how I go on.
