Any 2.1TD SED XM owners out there?

Post by falling-out-with-my-car »

If you have or have recently purchased one of the lovely classic XMs particularly a 2.1 diesel
would you please be kind enough to share your experiences thus far with someone
who is considering buying one as an everyday family car?
I am very interested in the mechanical side of things to costs of repairing it etc.
whats wears out the most often, service intervals for cambelt, cost of clutch replacement little things like that.

Many Thanks in advance.
Nigel.

You need to have a look at some Club-xm blogs.. like mine, with a couple of 2.1s on it. There are a few 2.1 TD owners on there too, and finally I should be a driver of one again at the end of the year.

Ive currently got a 2.1 SED on a H plate., also a K plate 2.1 SD, which Ive sold subject to light resto and MOT...

Ive also had a 2.1 D..

The 2,1 engine is a very good unit with a viraety of fuel systems fitted, original launched in 1990 on H plates they had Plastic inlets and Lucas Mechanical fuel pumps, and manual only gearbox.

1991 saw the option of automatic gearbox in which cars were fitted with Bosch Mechanical Pumps. Then in 1992 around K reg manual cars also were fitted with Bosch Pumps, EGR and alloy inlet manifolds.

This lasted to around 1997 when plastic manifolds returned and Lucas EPIC semi electronic pumps were introduced with keypad immobilser..

Of course this is all APPROXIMATE! The most frugal models are the early Lucas mechanical and Bosch mechanical MANUAL setups, the least are the Lucas EPIC ones due to emmision controls etc.

Manuals DO go quite well indeed for DERV bearing in mind 110bhp. ALL were cable operated clutch's and gear linkages and PUSH clutchs..

Auto box's are fine if smooth, then NEED essential regular oil changes with DEX 2 only, at around 6k a go to keep it healthy.

As said, possibly on Club-xm, head gaskets at 100k upwards due to disintrigration rather then cooling system problems and the Thermostat is on the RETURN cuircuit on the back of the engine above the lower rear engine mount area.

Series one cars are NOT as refind as series two cars, and S2 cars are quiter. But S1 cars go well and are better on fuel, as in 45 PLUG MPG..

The whole deal of running an average XM as a daily, if you are bailing on a Xantia because of head issues - fringe aspects of an XM will put you off very quickly. Best left these days, to hands on enthusiasts with good tooling and patience. I might cite the centre front Hydractive sphere as one example.

You can still run one on a daily basis Adam but you need to keep well on top of things... Even more so that with a Xantia. benefits are that intrinsically they are a nicer drive and more comfy overall which may be important to Nigel.

I'd say the rear centre was more of a sod than the front centre...

I once changed front steering ram pipes in-situ at the behest of someone who didn't want me removing the rack to do it. What a mongrel of a job!

excuse me butting in on the argument of maintenance but these sort of jobs will be reffered to pleiades my independant in Sawtry Cambridgeshire, he did most of the maintenance on my Xantia over the years well mechanical clutch and sphere changes.
and yes dare I say it belt changes to. it6s just a crying smae he hasn't got the room to swap engines on the Xantia which has no welding to the underneath at all thanks to waxoil.
I did the odd electrical.

While I am willing to learn about vehicle maintenance, I also believe I know my limits and when to get the experts in. I would rather pay an expert to do the job than to have a go at something I know I cannot do, and then pay the expert even more, as they will have to correct my errors as well. I am willing to learn, though.

I have heard a story whereby a printer helpdesk would suggest that the client tries a few things first (before then engineer is sent out). They have calculated that, on average, they will get MORE money as a result (probably as damage is caused by inexpert investigation) than if they sent out the engineer straight away.

I had to do it three times because it kept leaking.. my fault..

Yes changing pinion valves arent that bad.. the pas pipes were a slight pain. But not too bad.

Im not disagreeing with addo.. we all find different jobs different in dificulty to do.

Unfortunally on xm the pas pipes along the rack are not coated and do suffer rust issues..
