Driveshaft intermediate bearing

Post by Wookey »

Is there a secret to getting the driveshaft intermediate bearing out? The one I have seems 'reluctant'. It's a Xantia XUD9TF (now mounted in a peugeot expert).
Is it OK to unbolt the engine mount, (and lever it off the spigots putting it a few mm out of line) before pulling the driveshaft out of the gearbox so I can then worry about separating the driveshaft and mount. or does that risk bending something and I really do have to get the driveshaft out before taking the mount off?

If the latter what's the recommended method? The turbo pipe makes it hard to hammer the bearing with a drift. I could take that off too. But still one can only really get to the lower half and it really need to be drifted evenly. I have remembered to undo the L-shaped bolts which hold the IB in. I don't remember this job being so difficult in the past.

Anyway clues welcome.

I've found a local mate with a 10-ton press and getting the rubber bit out of a spare mount was very easy with that so I'm just taking this to bits to put a new mount in.

With the XM I clamped a large pair of molegrips onto the shaft and hammered them, after making sure the retaining bolts were in the correct position.

No you cant undo the mount because its on two locating dowls which you then need to lever the mount off before moving awsy which of course the drive shaft wont let you.. make sure the two "hockey stick" bolts are out the way and the only other way is to give a good hard hit on the protruding face on the other side facing the gearbox. Ive had some sieze in place that badly on engines that were comming out i had to remove the outer drivers side shaft.. remove the whole engine and box.. drop the gearbox off the engine and then put full force on the end of the shaft to shift it.

You could try heat as the mount is alloy and will expand much quicker then the bearing face which is hard steel this should allow the mount to let go a bit possibly...

So walloping the potruding shoulder is OK? I haven't tried too hard yet as I didn't want to damage the shaft or bearing or upset the balance.

I like the mole grip trick. Will give that a try. Something like a U-shaped piece cut from tube, with one end cut at an angle would perhaps be a good way of getting a solid force applied squarely (You can't actually hammer 'in-line' of course).

I've squirted some plusgas at it too in the hope that that might help overnight.

this is the method i use all the time without fail,

i have a old large screwdriver with no handle i use as a drift for these, just mind your arm is not under the diff as the shaft comes away, as you will get covered in gear oil, ( tray beneath is a good idea )

i dont like bashing my Vise grips ( molies ), just give the protruding collar/shoulder a couple of hefty wallops first

IF you remove the Passenger side drive shaft first then most if not all the diff oil will be drained then you wont get a stinky AWFULL shower then...

Well the most effective tool in the end turned out to be a bit of wood about 30cm long. That spread the load nicely and let me belt it really hard without damaging anything, and it came out. I'm not sure if I managed to loosen it first with any of the other things (cold chisel, crowbar, screwdriver and mole grips all got a try).

I drained the gearbox first through the drain hole so none fell out when the shaft came out.

I put a bit of copperslip on it whilst reassembling in the hope that it'll be easier next time.

Yes, I did - the initial post said "I have remembered to undo the L-shaped bolts which hold the IB in".
