Ppppainting

Post by lazza »

HI Forum

Well i've done a few jobs on the Xantia recently and it seems to be going well. However it's paintwork is in a very sorry state. As I'm skint, living in southern Spain, paying for a garage to paint it is out of the question.... it's also the same reason why I need to paint it, because we cant afford to buy a van for the business so the Xantia is the workhorse, but doesnt give a great impression when I turn up to jobs (see picture and weep) :shock: ! I want to paint it white, doesnt have to be perfect, and put publicity stickers on it.

So I wondered if anyone has any advice? I have a friend with a compressor spray gun, but have no idea what the procedure before painting is... or during or after for that matter :)

Anyway any advice/recommendations greatly appreciated.

Tell people you are participating in the University of ??? Paint longevity and environmental impact trials and you are being paid to drive round like that and never wash or polish it ..... :)

Seriously though, it's years since I did any amateur paintwork and it didn't go well. I think,it will be very hard to get a good plain finish, hours and hours of prep work and little chance of satisfactory outcome. The vinyl wrap idea is a good one.

google for "car vinyl wrap', you will get trillions of options. I didn't know it existed until recently, but now realise how come there are so many cars about with unusual paint jobs - they aren't really paint.

Ok, looks like a fantastic option! Ok, where can I buy the vinyl and any idea how much it should cost for the whole car?

If I was in your situation I'd love to try out the product "Plastidip" whereby it's a rubber based removable coating that can be applied over parts of, or all of the car...

This YouTube channel is quite informative - http://www.youtube.com/user/DipYourCarcom/videos" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Looks like it's quite a hit in the US, but I'd imagine you should be able to source the products needed.

Have a read here on the $50 paint job page,
http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master ... paint.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

give you an idea how you could do it!! That or go for a Matt paint as its not so critical on the finish!!

Plastidip it would be your best option and you can peel it off if you don't like it like a wrap but a bit cheaper and DIY possible as well :)

MDPsupplies in the UK can give me enough easyfit white glass vinyl wrap for around 100 quid+ VAT- this seems a pretty good deal to me- http://www.mdpsupplies.co.uk/vehiclewrappingvws1.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

what does the forum think?

If I buy it through a company that is registered for intra-community operations.. I could buy without VAT

However, despite that I think it's a very good price.... anyone agree?

I can imagine getting all that on to a semi decent standard is going to be a challenge and a half to do.
