After much soul searching I've dropped the 10/40 out and replaced it with the proper grade semi gear oil I didn't like going against the rule book to be honest and like you've all said why ignore Citroens specs.

I have not had any problems getting BV 75W80 from Citroen, at about £8 per litre.
