Erratic 2004 Berlingo 1.4 - ECU Wiring

Post by addo »

This week's curly one. Can Simon offer the wiring (harness) diagram for this one? VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] 116000 kilometres only.

It's stumbling slightly when pulling away, having unpredictable surges in cooling fan speed coupled with temperature gauge peaking and the "STOP" warning illuminating (false alarm) and low MAP readings at warm idle (270-290mb). I'm thinking the throttle pot or TPS, MAP and temp sensor are probably all fed off the same 5V rail and something is either losing continuity or shorting out.

Compression decent (175 PSI average), did not pin up crank/cam, injector dwell and coil times all good. New thermostat and system bled up. Battery a bit old, but still showing 14.3 charging voltage.

Here you go.

Engine ECU:

Engine cooling system:

Have you put a meter on the 5 volt reference ? Back probing the TPS or MAP sensor is probably the easiest place depending on the engine layout. If it seems ok at idle maybe run a pair of wires into the cabin so the voltage can be monitored while driving ?

AFAIK most/all ECU's share the same internal 5 volt reference for all sensors that require 5 volts even if it comes out on multiple pins on the ECU to different sensors. (eg internally linked) So a fault dragging down the 5 volt reference would have knock on effects for all sensors that rely on it.

Superb; many thanks.

I had tested the rail voltage at the temp sensor - standing not running. It was 4.9V which is close enough. The battery still worries me a little as it's dated March 2009. A buildup inside might mean changing output characteristics when another device changes electrical load and the alternator increases current output. Really should load test it.
