Xantia Mk.2 1.9 TD Estate, clutch related question.

Post by Deacon »

Hello everyone,
first of all I'd like to thank you for creating this forum/community. Lots of useful information in it.

So, my clutch needs a change. Currently, in an attempt to do a gentle take off, the whole front end vibrates (well, most of the time), because of the clutch's slipping. Last year I made a pretty sporty taking off at a traffic light, and I think that this (combined with the clutch's age) destroyed some of the springs in it.

It isn't until now that I have the time to change the clutch. When I called at the local Citroën dealer, they stated prices starting from 150 euros for a recycled clutch and ending at 175 euros for a brand new one.
Now my questions are:

1 - Will there be a difference in the performance/quality and the life span of a recycled clutch compared with a brand new one? (We're talking about normal exploitation, not abusive one)
2 - In service.citroen.com, I see two currently available clutch kits from Citroën. They're under the following numbers: RP 2050 S9 - Pro clutch kit; RP 2051 T5 - Standard clutch change kit. What's the difference between the two?
3 - I know that currently Citroën are getting their clutches, for all of their manual gearbox cars, from Valeo. So I think it'll be cheaper if I go and by my clutch directly from Valeo and not from Citroën , but I don't know under which part number in Valeo's directory the clutch kit for '98 onwards Xantia 1.9 TD currently is. Can you help me with this one?

Thanks in advance. Your help will be much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum Deacon and thank you for the kind words!

Yes, there will be a difference. Steer well clear of all cheap ones and re-manufactured clutches.

Hard practical experience has shown that only OEM quality Luk or Valeo clutches are worth fitting. Valeo for preference.

Are you going to do the job yourself? If so there are guides on here.

Do change the clutch release shaft bushes at the same time. They're nylon and cost pennies. They do wear and cause juddering on take-off.

Do also replace the gearbox driveshaft oil seals and refill the gearbox with only 75W-80 oil as specified. Use nothing else.

hi and welcome

as Sir Jim says really

did you enter your chassis No. into service citroen,

if so it will give you the exact clutch kit/part No. fot your car,

also i thought on Valeo's online catalog there is an option to cross ref an OE part No.,

otherwise you should be able to do a specific make/model search

were are you located

Hello, thank you for your answers! I'm located in Bulgaria, Sofia. Everyone here (both official and unofficial) Citroën specialists were telling me that there's no difference between the recycled and brand new clutches, which are offered by PSA. Of course this seemed fishy to me, so this is why I asked you for this too. :)
I'll go for a Valeo clutch, just need to see the correct part number in their directory, will do as citronut suggested. I'm just 22 years old so there's no way I can do the job myself, I'll use the services of a local unofficial/independent Citroën specialist, the price is around 70 euros for the labor.

About these clutch release shaft bushes and gearbox drive shaft oil seals, can you tell me in which sub-section to look for them at the service.citroen's main gearbox section and possibly give me their part numbers? Because I'm not sure about which parts I need to look for at service.citroen .
If better, can you show me pictures where they are, because the official Citroën spare part dealer in Bulgaria likes to "act a fool" and misleads you, when you ask for the part by its name and not being sure where it is located on the vehicle, because they like to tilt the monitor toward you and ask "Is this the part you're looking for?".
This is the VIN number of my car: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] , so I'll be happy if you can point out to me which are the clutch release shaft bushes and gearbox drive shaft oil seals.

Once again, thanks for your help! :)

Hi Welcome plus don't forget the spigot bearing that goes into end of crank as if that gets dry/worn if not changed before can give you plenty of judder as supports other end of input shaft.
While your at it check the engine mounts as one on there by gearbox as if there getting tired/shot can allow judder and if clucth worn etc like you say can make them work hard and as ive found on top one RHD side the rubber at rear of it breaks up from use so rocks back n forth and makes it feel worse than it is.
Clutch kits normally come over here in a 3 piece kits and as been said aboove while you have gearbox out might as well change/check the other bits as don't want to have to pull apart for something else could check cable and pedal while unloaded/apart then should be a nice drive again

The bushes are seen on the page under Clutch>CLUTCH WTHT RET MECH PLATE BEARING BUFFE, items 5 and 6:
Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT

0000217520 FORK BEARING 2.26 GBP 2.71 GBP
0000217521 FORK BEARING 1.68 GBP 2.02 GBP

The input shaft seal / tube is seen under clutch>ENGINE CLUTCH HOUSING MANUAL GEARBOX, item 5:

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT
0000210535 GUIDE BUSH 14.20 GBP 17.04 GBP

It lists 2004J3 as the part number for the clutch kit, at £191. This is widely avaiable aftermarket in the UK as it was used in quite a few Citroen and Peugeot models.

Oscar - there's no spigot bearing on this engine, and the clutch comes in only 2 parts, as the release bearing is fixed to the pressure plate since it's a pull clutch. Which makes re-engaging the release fork 'fun'

Found the parts in service.citroen. Thank you guys! :)

Another two questions did just come to my mind. Once, when I depressed the clutch pedal, there was this slight sound that sounded like "think" (the sound), and since then the pedal does not come to the very top of its depressed position (it comes like 4/5th to the top position), like some sort of spring on the pedal itself did let loose, or something that's holding it. Did something break or is it just because of the clutch?
Also there was this Citroen specialist here, who did tell me that there's some plastic "stick" (or shall I call "lever") on the gearbox body to which the clutch cable is connected. He said to me that if this thing gets broken/snapped, the clutch pedal will stay all the way down and it will be useless until that broken "stick" is changed. Which lever exactly did he mean? Should I change that too, just in case?
