Ear Clamps vs Jubilee

Post by romie »

Hi guys, thought I'd put this here as this is where all my other posts have been.... thanks again for all help! Absolutely fantastic :)

Anywho, I'm thinking about flexible hose to rigid pipe fixings.

I've not had much experience between Ear Clamps vs Jubilee.

The question is in regards to 'best seal over time'.

Anyone had a lot of user experience with the two, to come to a conclusion of what is better for this purpose?

Basically, does the Ear Clamps 'hold a better seal for longer'?

Cheers, romie

Depends on what you want to seal really, a properly sized jubilee clip is generally good enough for most things under the bonnet - except maybe for high pressure fuel.
And to be honest if the joint is sealed...it'll probably stay sealed until something rots away, and it's usually the rubber hose that goes first.
The main benefit of course is that you can take a jubilee off quite easily and reuse it.

Hi Chlorate, this question came from finding a split in the rubber, 'oil return hose/(pipe)', on the near side/passenger side suspension strut.

After reading through a number of valuable posts on this site, (such a great site, with a great set of invaluable experience!!!), it seemed clear that I should be able to fix the split with a hose connector and a couple of clamps/clips.

After looking around at choices, the two options came up. (ear vs jubilee).

The main debate is whether to purchase a 'Pinchers' tool or not bother :/

So the application is: low pressure LHM running through: 3/16", (4.7625mm) OD brake line pipe to rubber hose (3/16 ID, 10mm(ish) OD).

Clamp/clip to go on rubber hose, against 3/16" metal pipe.

Thanks, romie

...oh rubber hose would be made of nitrile rubber, (to avoid hardening with contact with the oil).

(on a side note: I have number of PVC hoses in the car that need yearly re-adjustment due to heat deformation, (softening/hardening), (I presume this is unavoidable due to the proprieties of PVC.)

One of the most helpful forums on the net in my opinion. The chaps here have gotten me out of a sticky situation many a time :)

If it's an LHM return pipe then a jub should be absolutely fine - there is very little pressure in the return circuit, as you hinted the hoses themselves are the bigger problem. In your case the bit of metal pipe would ideally be flared a little at the ends so the flexible hose can't be easily pulled out.

there is no pressure in th strut return pipe/s at all, a cable tie would be fine,

it would be very difficult to find a Jubilee clip to close around a pipe the diameter of the leg pipe,

more appropriate would be a fuel line clamp which a designed to stay round against the pipe,

the other problem with patching these pipes is the reason it has split will be due to it perishing,
so it will keep splitting again and again,

you are better of fitting a new pipe and clip below is price and part No.'s

I repaired pipe with a plastic hose coupling of 5mm or 3/16" I think.
Two jubilee clips on either end.
One 60mm jubilee clip (from Screwfix), around the whole lot, but keeping the large metal plate that goes onto the back of the rubber pad to spread the load of the clip.

I agree that, that pipe is just going to keep splitting.
I went over to a car breakers and found the pipes on the similar aged cars are all perished as well - not surprisingly.

I called Citroen parts who quoted £25 (shorter one) for one side and £65 (longer one) for the other!
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong parts?

firstly i think you are looking at the wrong parts/numbers,
No.'s 5 and 6 in your drawing are the metal pipes attached to the chassis rail's, which the leg pipes attach to,

you will find the leg pipes and there retaining clips on the drawing for front shockers/struts/cylinders,

part No, 's and price's as i posted above

95050399 LEAK BACK HOSE 12.88 GBP 15.46 GBP 15.46 GBP

96127591 ADJUST COLLAR 4.41 GBP 5.29 GBP 5.29 GBP

also in using a jubilee clip to hold the pipe block to the strut even retaining the metal plate, it is still possible to compress the block far to mich

Good morning Malcolm, thanks, yes I could see that I could put too much pressure when tightening the large jubilee :s Also the jubilee's thickness of the band was such that it wouldn't fit in the metal locking tabs on the large metal plate that goes on the back of the rubber seal.

I've purchased one of these special clip pliers now so will look into replacing jubilee back with the original clip :)

Many thanks for the info regarding the correct part numbers!
That would have def been an annoying mistake :/

Hey, I found the parts that you are referring to under suspension/front springs..
Ugh, many thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
:)

I don't suppose you happen to know but it doesn't look like I've got the same rubber tube set-up on the rear suspension does it?
(just trying to pre-empt any leaks at that end!)
