ZX Cold Start Problem

Post by r2d2bis »

Hi Guys
Ive got a 1991 Zx 1.9D 233000km on the clock.
Runs fine when started but as the cold weather is coming i'm having some problems starting in the morning.
At the flick of the key it cranks over fine about 0.5s and starts but it sounds like it's firing on 3 cilinders. Coughs and splutters for a couple of sec and then clears.
Ive checked th cold start cable, new glow worms, and tried pumping the diesel pear to pressurise the circuit but to no result.
If I flick the key with my foot on the floor for a sec it starts ok.
Any clues ?
Cheers

I like your terminology, hehe glow worms and diesel pears.
Are your glow worms the correct type for your engine, even if they are they may not be hot enough if obtained from certain manufacturers.
Engine could be down on compression slightly on one cylinder, causing it to generate less heat from compression, reving the engine more compresses the air in the cylinder faster so it gets hotter and burns the fuel better.
There could be an injector fault, locate the lame cylinder and swap its injector to another cylinder, if the missfire then moves to that cylinder then the injector is the culprit.
Check the easey stuff first though.
