Possibly a hooking point for engine fitment/removal?
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

I doubt it somehow, its doesn't look that strong. Besides, there are already 4 proper eye hooks for hoisting the engine - two at the front and two at the back...

The XM with ES9 engine (at least the later ones) have the main mount bracket made of cast steel not aluminium, and they don't have the extra bracket to the manifold.
I think it might be a safety strap to stop the engine moving too far if the aluminium bracket breaks.

Yeah it does look a bit scruffy!

There are no sensors in that picture Mike. The three brown connectors between cambox cover and the plastic conduit are the front bank fuel injectors.

The thing with a dollop of glue is a capacitor that is part of the ignition circuit primary, although I haven't been able to identify it on the wiring diagrams yet! :? The plastic on mine is all chipped away at the bolt end as well.

It's ye olde suppression cap. Looks like a few changes of oil and a flush or two, wouldn't go amiss.

the ye olde supression cap, if failed can cause all sorts of poor running and gearbox noises

Where is it connected though, is it connected to the common positive feed to the coils as a filter ? Its not shown on the wiring diagrams at all. An after thought maybe ? Disconnecting it doesn't affect the running at all, but its possible its already open circuit, I don't have anything to test a capacitor.

First thing you need to do is count all of the green front doors in your street then measure your battery voltage when the car is at 904rpm. Divide the battery voltage by number of green doors and if the outcome is less than 3 you need to do a gearbox flush, if it is greater than 3 then you need a new TC. If of course the number is exactly 3 then you've one the Citroen lottery, this enables you to walk up to any participating Citroen UK Dealer and claim a free bonnet stay clip.

Or i could be talking total crap.

My understanding though is that it is meant to help supress electrical noise so with it blown.... well you can get your scope out and see ;)

unlikely though.

My gut instinct is that there isn't much wrong with the engine on your car. They all have off days and can be a little gutless at times, they are french of course

Maybe you should try driving it then, because in the last few days its been more than "a little gutless". When you put your foot 3/4 of the way down at 2000 rpm in 2nd gear and it takes 5 - 8 seconds to pick up and accelerate to 4000 rpm (the rpm holds at about 2500 for nearly 5 seconds) there's something wrong... 194 HP my arse. Then a few minutes later acceleration in the same conditions might be nearly normal.

I'm sure there's not much wrong with it and it will be a massive DOH! moment if I ever find it, but there is a lot wrong with the performance when symptomatic I can assure you. This is not some imaginary thing.

In which case i strongly urge you to come to a meet, many different eyes etc or you're welcome to come down to mine/Jim's neck of the woods and we'll have a damn good look at it, we also have a good stock of spares so we can try things out etc

5-8 seconds??? does it slowly pickup and then go or is it nothing, then it wakes up?

I'd love to come down to one of the meets, but they're just too far to drive... both fuel cost, and a trip too far for a car that, lets face it, has issues. Even in a good car the length of the trip would seriously put me off, until there is a meet that is a bit closer to me.

Yes I kid you not, 5-8 seconds.

I'll try to describe it - if you start off at 2000 rpm in 2nd with the TC unlocked, then push the throttle down to about 3/4 (not full otherwise it will trigger a kick down to 1st) the engine revs will immediately go up to around 2500-2800 which is about the stall speed (differential) of the torque converter, but go no higher, over the next 5 seconds or so the car will very slowly accelerate but the engine revs will steadily go DOWN a few hundred rpm during this 5 seconds as the torque converter transition to lockup puts more direct load on the engine. After maybe 5 seconds or so the engine revs will stop going down (TC has finished locking up) and start climbing slowly again and reach 4000 after maybe 8 seconds. Yes its that bad sometimes.

It seems like the engine has no torque in these conditions, so much so that when the torque converter transitions to lock up the road speed stays the same and it pulls the engine revs down rather than the engine revs staying the same(ish) and the car accelerating, which is what happens when its running well.

When running well you notice the transition to torque converter lockup by the engine revs staying steady or increasing slightly whilst the road speed is accelerating quite rapidly. As soon as I go to accelerate and I hear the engine revs sagging as the TC transitions to lock up I know its in one of its poor running moods...

Chris, I will be backcharging you for the plain cinnamon half donut expelled through my nose upon reading your post about troubleshooting the suppression cap.

Also there will be a penalty applied for pain and suffering caused by you deliberately subconsciously suggesting the song "Green Door" which bounded gleefully to the forefront of my memory and is now lodged there happily beating the snot out of my synapses with its terminal banality.

Do I get a reduction in my liability if I told you I was thinking of you as I wrote it?

OK, I'll drop the half donut claim.
