engine temp
Hi, my current Xantia, 1996 TD, the temp gauge hits 90 degress before the fans kick in. is there any way of getting the temp down to 80 degress? before the fans cut in. it seems to be runnning a bit hot! my old TD always ran at 80 degress. any help greatfully received, Terry.

Re: engine temp
A good flush out of the coolant system and a new thermostat may help. They can get lazy and not open fully as well as the more usual (seems rare on PSA though) jamming closed.
The small bypass pipe on the top of the thermostat housing used to be prone to getting blocked, very early (pre Xantia) XUD units had a screw in stub that would block, I drilled mine out to a larger capacity. The later 'stubs' which are pressed in are a bit better in this respect though.
I'd take the stat out and flush the engine through and if possible whatever pipes you can easily get off direct the hose into them too.
Typically running temps seems to be about 80c, fan should be on at about 90c

Re: engine temp
I clearly remember my Xantia frightening me on the M25 so much that I pulled the brown connector off the thermostat housing forcing the fans to run at full chat, I had become used to my BX that switched them at something like 88 degrees, my S2 1.9TD Xant actually switched at 95 degrees, not sure whether that was half or full speed though, they were never quite right on that car.
BXs since 1993 built 1.9 TZD turbo, got a S2 Xantia estate, brilliant car! 2013, Xantia HDI LX 110 2000 new car with 122,000, l C2 HDI Rusty rocket, C3 Picasso HDI new to me.
Re: engine temp
I seem to remember the thermostat doesn't open till 88? My car gets up to 110 when going uphill with the air con on and outside temp 40 plus. In the winter only gets to 75!

Re: engine temp
Citroen specify an 85C thermostat for all 1.9 XUDs except Activa (90C). In my experience, if the cooling system is in good condition (pump, belt tension, thermostat and coolant) the fans rarely come on except in slow traffic or when parking.

Re: engine temp
Let me see if I'm slapped down this time!
Your Xantia thermostat opens at 89 deg. which is best for that engine, why run it at anything else?
Well I think It's 89 either that or 83 Deg. anyway, nothing wrong with a running fan in this heat.

Re: engine temp
Each engine design has its optimal performance parameters. If the designers get it right, they then design systems to keep the engines within those parameters.
