C5 Problems - Help please!

Post by Northern_Mike »

2003, 2.0 HDI 110.

Cutting out , seem accelerator pedal related.

Lexia says "accelerator pedal jammed" (or stuck, can't recall which)

Drives ok most of the time.

What's the likely cause of this, and the fix please - I'm thinking the TPS is dead or dying..

There is a TPS reset procedure (this is what lexia says it is for me whenever I go to clear the Injection ECU codes):

Also think there's quite a few places in the lexia that will give you "Pedal Position" or so (gearbox and injection ECUs on mine I believe at least), which will give you how much %age the pedal is pressed. You should be able to graph it on the C5, to see if it correlates with the cutting out, or looks incorrect. :)

Ah, brilliant, thanks Ben. Now all I need to do is send the Lexia up to my brother...

I would be inclined to, as a stop gap measure, spray a load of proper contact cleaner into the TPS, and then pump the pedal through its full travel a few times. If there is grot on the tracks then this might help clear it off.

Mike, I don't think you actually need a Lexia to program the pedal - just follow the procedure in the message that Ben posted! (The message from from the Lexia is just advice on how to program the pedal, the Lexia itself doesnt do it AFAIK) Worth a shot anyway before sending your Lexia away... :)

Did all that.

Now it doesn't even start.

Ideas please, before I post the Lexia, or go up there myself.

Lexia does NOT always put you in the right direction for faults. That could be an OLD fault still recorded.

Non start on these can also be caused by a dirty Fly Wheel sensor on top of the gearbox.

I bought a Xantia HDi that wouldn't start, I removed the fly wheel sensor, gave it a wipe, put it back and it fired first time.

I *think* when it was last on the Lexia, I cleared the faults, and it showed up again. I could be wrong with that though.

Would the flywheel sensor cause it to stutter and cut out as well Paul?

Well, it was occasionally not starting and cutting out when driving - at lights, etc. It got progressively worse. I believe my brother did the rest procedure above last night, and now it won't start at all..

Crank an injector pipe and spin the engine see if theres fuel at an injector.. If so, its on the electronics side..

Cam sensor
Regulator on the end of the pump
Rail fuel Pressure sensor
Flywheel sensor

Those are the main things if theres fuel at the injectors when the engine is spun..

A faulty camshaft sensor wont cause the engine to cut out when the engine is already running & it doesn't have any effect on the running of the engine. It is only used for cylinder reference on initial start up. It will however stop the engine starting up if its faulty.

RE: Cam Sensor, yes I realise that, A customer had a Xantia HDi, it went all the way to Liverpool from anglesey. Stopped, then wouldnt start again. When I had a look I found the cam sensor had moved and was loose and it had worn the tip away..

I was listing sugestions for non starting, not so much cutting out.

Ive only had non starting Xantia HDi's, but not cutting out. When I did have a cutting out problem, it cut out at high load on accelleration, but after a moment of key off would always start again. The cutting out was a engine fuel pump. But failiure to start needs to be started by seeing if there is actually fuel at the injectors... as said above.

Rang my favourite Citroen Indy this morning on behalf of my brother and told him the problem.

"Hmm, that'll be the fuel pump. remove seat base, give it a tap or two"

I passed this info on to my brother, who did as such. Well, a light tap didn't do anything . A "good tw@tting" did.

Car now starts and runs ok. A new fuel pump is apparently needed.
