A question you might find answered by Lighty or the Flying Clutchman.

Both petrol motors?

basically i bought a clutch on ebay for my 1.8 petrol but it wont go into first correctly (grinds, unless going into 3rd or 2nd first), I've tried changing everything to do with the clutch/gearbox and it still does it, as i really didn't want to pull the box again.

The clutch i got on ebay the description said for 1.8 and 2.0 #-o

I'd be suspecting a release bearing of different height.

service.citroen shows the same clutch and relase fork for 1.8 and 2.0 motors. What make was the e-bay clutch? I rather suspect it is duff somehow. Given the work required, and relative cost, I would only fit a (new, not re-man) Valeo or LUK clutch.

Why was the clutch changed in the first place ? Just worn out, collapsed release bearing etc ? Did the problem exist before changing the clutch ?

As you've probably worked out, it would have been quicker to pull the gearbox out than mess about with all sorts of other things. Your clutch is dragging almost certainly because it's faulty. You don't say what make the clutch is but the moral is: don't buy clutches off ebay. ECP and GSF sell genuine clutches at a good discount and have lots of branches. Still at least the 2,0l petrol is a pretty straightforward job unlike the 1.6 HDi.

Or because whoever fitted it let the gearbox hang on it and distorted the disc hub.

You've really got to go some to damage the plate by hanging the gearbox on it. I've had many occassions where very heavy gearboxes have 'hung' on the clutch or had to be inched in and it's always a patterned one which gives problems with dragging.

its a valeo clutch kit. I personally originally changed it because the thrust bearing distroyed itself.
when I changed the clutch I had the box fully supported on a hoist until all the bolts were back in.

Only 2 other suggestions, 1 the most obvious, clutch plate fitted the wrong way round, 2 damaged bearing sleeve. They normally get chewed up when the bearing fails. If it's badly scored it can stop the bearing sliding freely.Oh. 3rd one the bearing isn't located on the arm properly.

Clutch plate was double checked by myself and my father during fitting and the bearing sleeve was new due to the thrust bearing eating it

i'll be taking the box off again over the next few days so i'll see if an octopus or some thing jumps out at me
