Repairing split battery terminal ?

Post by Mandrake »

While working on the car I noticed that the negative battery clamp didn't seem to want to clamp properly, looking underneath I found this: #-o

What's the best way to repair it ? I assume it requires some special tool to crimp a new terminal on the cable properly, or do I need to buy a whole lead complete with pre-crimped terminal ? :?

Never a dull moment with this car... :lol:

Remove the nut and bolt.
Hack off the most broken side of the gap leaving one good bolt eye.
Get a £3.99 negative terminal from Halfrauds. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... &langId=-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Take the bolt out.
Fit the remaining eye of the old terminal between the two bolt eyes of the new terminal and use the new bolt to keep it all together and tighten it up.

That's a good start. Thought we had replaced the terminals on this car? Simon, you know they (terminals and clamps) are conically tapered and differ between P&N, right?

As a matter of immediacy I would replace the positive at the same time.

here you go Simon

the type i would go for are the end of the second row down, or at least that basic idea were the cable is clampt, rather than two screws going into/through the cable core,

or better still get a good second hand lead from the breakers yard

Malc, you might want to point out which one, as the end of the second row is dependent on screen resolution :)

I'll help you out a bit, here's a static image of the results, I'm guessing your screen is no larger than 2x this width, so should appear somewhere in this lot:

Xac

Have you done this?

For some reason i'm having trouble imagining what you mean, is the new clamp wrapping around the old one? Got a pic at all? My V6 positive is not holding tight so i'm looking for a fix. Tried Malcs replacement and they're not large enough to fit all the cables into and try finding a scrap one in decent condition these days ... all offers accepted!

Either Jenny or Juliet has a neg terminal like that. The original terminal split directly across from the opening that the bolt crosses so it is the bolt eye closest to the wires that she uses.

Picture the = as the wires and O as the terminal

Currently ==O
Bolt removed ==U
The top of the U is the two eyes the bolt goes through
Bad eye removed ==J
New terminal O
New terminal with bolt removed n
Put the legs of the n over the eye in the top of J and refit the bolt

.....n
==J

Giving
....O
==J

The barrel on the outside of the new terminal that is meant for the earth lead isn't used.

On Sylv's ZX, it has cracked through completely.

NFP part!

When I get the chance I might ask a plumber mate to lead-weld hers back together somehow.

I had to replace the +ve on mine a while back as it had gone high resistance - bought a pair of quick release clamps from Halfords, with the cable clamp type. Carefully cut away the old clamp then attached the new - it is a challenge to get the cables in the clamp though - and the screws are in the bottom, so difficult to tighten up - I think I had to take the battery out to do it. I didn't need to change the -ve clamp, but the cable is much smaller, so would be easier to change out.

My positive terminal was one of two intermittent problems; I replaced it with a generic brass one ($18 here! :shock: :cry: ) as push had come to shove - but next time would use the ICE crowd's preferred chunky brass ones with multiple holes and setscrews.

So ..... the 'new' clamp goes on the post, yes?

I just couldn't fathom out your previous post (much like your python scripts ...)

Now i see what you are doing.

And it seems to work ok?

You have to make sure that you can tighten it, so the other eye may be better depending how damaged it is, or you could cut/file down the other one.

spoz in an emergency and to use your method Xac, if it does not tighten up as its shown in your picy, you could always fit the remaining lead lug/eye to the outside of the replacement terminal

I did this on what is now Mungkie's Activa:

Image

New battery clamp with extra screwy bits was about £7 from Halfords. I cut the old clamp off with a dremel, as you can see (it's on the airbox) but you could use a hacksaw then fixed the clamp on and put it all in place. I imagine it's still on the car perfectly secure.
