Strange noise caused by steering

Post by Dommo »

Hi all

I've had a strange symptom on my VSX which has been there ever since I bought the car but has recently become more frequent. Basically when you steer right a lot (ie a large angle on the wheel), or start straightening up after steering right, through a T junction for instance, the car makes a strange juddering sound. Which I can only assume is the steering rack?

This video attempted to capture it, but it sounds totally different in person. I wondered whether it was air leaking into the PAS system, it does sound almost like fluid/air being messed around with. So I replaced the main LHM feed pipe from the tank to the pump, no better.

Any ideas what it could be?

I have been thinking about this since you showed me the problem today, check the condition of the power steering ram mountings.
Not sure how difficult it is to change the ram, not too bad I think, if you had a spare it might be worth swapping it.

I thought that taffy, cleaned it and it's no better. Changed that pipe to the pump, no better. Good suggestion Stewart, I'll have to try and have a look at it the ram, it's pretty much all that's left isn't it?

My thinking is that its a two way ram, if you look at how it works its different for each turning direction, like your mystery noise.

My dad seems to have fixed this noise by accident. There's an unusual looking automatic tensioner on the earlier 1.9TD engine, not the usual one on the later cars. And it appears that the automatic tensioner has been seized in my car since I've had it. I thought it was a normal fixed pulley, and only recently has it started to give me some problems. It had a fault so that the belt was flapping even when brand new and with the manual tensioner fully tight.

After replacing the three pulleys on my AUX belt set up, the noise has gone away completly!

This is the automatic tensioner that had failed to tension my belt:
