c5 engine

Post by mm1 »

hey guys.i have a c5 2.0l hdi.the other day my car just died out going along the
motorway.seemed to be alot of smoke from the exhaust in the process.
took it to local mechanic and he says either a piece of a piston broke or
else a ring.can this engine be repaired or is another second hand the way to
go.the car is 2003 and has 180,000 miles on it.any advice greatly appreciated.

first you need to know exactly whats gone wrong with the engine to know if its repairable. If a bit of the piston has broken then unlikely repairable. Best to get a borescope down the injector hole & have a look.

when i took of the oil filler cap there is alot of pressure and alot of steam coming
out.mechanic says it is either a piece of a piston broke or else rings.either way he says
fixing my own was not the way to go.so its make up my mind time.either get rid or get a second hand engine.
can get one about 2 hours drive away,it has 110,000 miles and cost 450 euros,is this price and mileage a bit high.it is
out of a 05 reg and mine is a 03 reg,are these compatible?

I would say from the symptoms that your mechanic is probably right. I don't know where you are but here you could probably pick up a good secondhand engine for less than the cost of stripping yours down to find the problem.

hey peter.i am in the south of ireland, county limerick.i have been out in the car there for the last hour
and check the oil filler cap again.there is still a fair bit of steam out of it and spitting out drops of oil.
the car takes only a couple of seconds longer to start than it used to,but other than that you would think
there is nothing wrong with the car.this is probably a stupid question, but is there any chance that steam
and pressure is normal and there is nothing wrong with it?

Whilst I'm no expert, looking at the 2.0hdi for the MkII and the MkI on service.citroen.com, it would seem not. The MkII has RHR or RHL (both 138) as the marking, whereas the MkI has RHZ (110) or RHY (90). This also documents the changes to the engines :)

If it was a broken piston ring or piston I would expect it to only start on 3 cylinders, it might run OK on 4 once its started, is it doing that? The difference between the engines is I believe that the early one was 8 valve and the later one 16 valve, I would think an 03 should be an 8 valve, the changeover point was around 05. Look at the rocker cover the 8 and 16 valve are different.

Just to clarify, the engine didn't start to overrun did it? what i mean by that is that you take your foot off the throttle & the revs continue to rise to their maximum with tons of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. If that happened, it means an injector has failed.

Many years ago piston failure was quite common, a ring would break and work its way up the piston until it emerged on the top, there would then be a loud knocking noise as the piston continually rammed it against the head, usually leaving dents in both, replacing the piston usually effected a cure but parts were much cheaper in those days and engines much dearer.
