Or perhaps you could pop the float out as described (it's on a bayonet fitting a bit like a lightbulb, twist it anti-clockwise and lift out carefully) and investigate why it may have stuck. It's quite possible it just needs a clean I think.

As has been said earlier in this topic, it would be very unusual for the LHM level indicator to fail.
From the symptoms you describe, I think it is more likely that the pump is sucking in air through a hole in the hose from the LHM tank to the pump. It could just be a loose joint at either end, or it could be a crack in the plastic fitting at the top of the tank.
