Hmmm, how many times have we left the keys in the car by mistake?
And my parents haven't in their ~15 years of it being a possibility. Of course, Nissan give you two keys as standard, unlike Citroen, so if you're not thousands of miles away from the second set then it's generally not an issue anyway. EIther way really I think you adapt to the features of the car etc... I used to be very OCD with locking the primera, looking around and re-pressing the lock to try to remember that I locked it... now with the auto folding mirrors on lock on the Citroen, I use that as my "tell" that I've locked the car.
BTW: Simon, the buttons on the primera at least are not ones you can accidentally press, which actually caused a fair bit of wear on the buttons:
They were replaced with newer ones which were also recessed so it was rather difficult to accidentally press the buttons:
