Never heard anything positive about Avon tyres.

Or make-up.

Think they're UK based, and pushed by National tyres. I had a pair of ZV5s on one of my Xantias and I wouldn't have them again - they were noisy and didn't last very long. I've been very pleased with a number of Toyo Proxes CF1s I've had on various cars - they are a bit soft, but this is made up by the fact that they are pretty cheap.

Apart from the Matadors I put on the Berlingo, I've always put Avons on my cars since, oh, about 2002. Had them on Saab 900 Turbos, XMs, Xantias, MX5s.. I like them. Plenty of wet grip, not too noisy, plenty of grip in the dry on an MX5. Nice tyre for the price. Never had any problems with wear.

Toyo proxes are another decent tyre for the price.

Citroenmad will shortly be along to explain further..

Avon were one of the top brands up to about the mid 70's. In the UK it was Dunlop or Avon if you wanted to go fast in a road car. Motorsport, notably rallying but they even won Le Mans aeons ago. Standard fit on Rolls Royce once upon a time. Now part of the Cooper Tire and Rubber Company of the USA.

You don't hear much about them now but I think they might still have some racing involvement in the lesser formulae.

As for their current road tyres, don't really know. Their quality control should be OK because the big brands can't afford bad press.

Several people whose opinion I value swear by them for a brilliant all-rounder, namely ZV5's. I'll be replacing the Xantias tyres for them soon.

The figures don't look too good, but the averages are compiled from independent reviews from members of the public, so I suppose it's kind of more real than a motoring magazine, or a tyre company with a sales agenda.
Tyres are not something to be stinted on, but when you have a limited budget you have to compromise.
The best advice is, if you have a budget tyre, don't expect a premium drive. Budget tyres are OK if you drive within their, and your limitations. Yes, all manufacturers say their product is as good as the expensive stuff but it's probably not true.
Don't expect miracle longevity or performance and the Avons should be OK.
Basically, if you ask 50 people for their thoughts on a particular tyre, you will get at least 20 different opinions, and opinions are based on the individuals experience with the tyre. Some will say they are rubbish, because they drive like boy racers on a budget tyre. Others will say they don't last, because they have to be first away from the traffic lights and round the roundabout. Some will say they are great in the wet because the only drive to the shops at 30 mph and never need to brake hard. All opinions.
If it's what you can afford, go with it, but get a feel for them before entering a rally!

( I have Federals on my C5 2.2 HDI and have heard horror stories about them, but I have had absolutely no problems over 7,000 miles so far. They were on the car when I bought it and show very little wear up to now)

Avon have been about for a long time, I had them on my 1939 Ford Prefect! From what I remember they don't wear very well. I am at present using Nexen, the wear is not quite as good as some others but for comfort and low road noise they are the best I have come across.

I had a pair of ZV3s on the front of the green lady until last November. I can't remember how well they wore, but the wet grip and braking was good. Downside was they were relatively noisy - the set of Goodyear Ultragrip 8s that some lucky Frenchman will get cheap  were amazing in all departments tho' I didn't have them long enough to find out how well they wore (not too well I suspect).

I've used Avons for the front rims on both the C5 and the Xsara. 215s on the C5 and 195s on the Xsara. I found no fault with them other than the fact that they lasted less than 19000 miles on the C5. On the Xsara they did a bit better at 24K.
