is it just me picking this up,,but my heater only runs when cars is running is this just normal,my car is a citroen xsara Picasso desire 2.0 hdi 03 thanks

Yep its normal on any car for the heater not to work with the engine off... even if the cabin fan were allowed to continue running with the engine off, without any water circulating between the engine and the heater matrix the air would go cold within a couple of minutes! For that reason, and to avoid running the battery flat when the engine isn't running (the cabin fan uses a LOT of power, over 20 amps on full speed) the fan isn't allowed to run when the engine isn't running...

that's a funny one my last car would run engine on or off,,that was a toyota avensis vtt-i year 2000 lol
