my friends P reg TD XANT sound like a bog of nails as reported in onther posts regarding the lift sensor,
the loom plug going to the sensor is two pin as we all know, but there are three wires in the loom plug, one being an earth, which pin dose this piggy back onto as its floating around not connected, pin No. 1 or 2 and could this cause the bag of nails syndrome

Re: needle lift sensor wires
it seems the lift sensor it functioning, and the wire floating around is for the cable screening as the outer sleeve is lined with foil,
so what else can cause it to sound like a bag of nails

Re: needle lift sensor wires
Get your Lexia on it Malcolm and check the timing as set by the ECU is faithfully followed by the pump.
Check on the Lexia that there is a valid Needle Lift Sensor Signal and a valid TDC signal. Both are essential but one or the other can go and still the engine will run and the tacho work.
Disconnecting each sensor in turn should produce a difference in engine note. The one that doesn't might be duff..
Check also the coolant temperature sensor is good as the it might be telling the ECU the engine is always stone-cold and thus keeping a lot of cold advance in effect...

Re: needle lift sensor wires
ok Jim
can the lift sensor go intermittent,
as yesterday at one point i started it up and it ran as it should,
unplugging the lift sensor with engine running cause the clattering to be 10 time worse,
so unless these can go intermittent that should rule that one out yes?????,
i did have the DIS-LEXIA pluged up it, and it did come up with a fault with the lift sensor, but i could not work out what it was telling me,
i also ran it through parameters and the lift sensor was showing 1 volt????

Re: needle lift sensor wires
Yes, they can go intermittent Malcolm but it's more likely the plug that goes intermittent...
On one Lexia screen and I forget which now there's a place you can see the advance as commanded by the ECU and the value the pump has adjusted itself to. That's the critical one to look at... they should, by and large, follow each other precisely and be the same value.

Re: needle lift sensor wires
i had another look at this jalopy this morrning,
started from cold its very clattery, whilst it was running i unplugged the TDC sensor, this did alter the running made it more noisy,
i have almost got to a point of all the cam belt covers off, to physically check the belt timing,
got the cam and pump pegged off, and the crank woodruff key looks to be about one tooth retarded, directly under the center of the small raised square block above the sprocket,
will check/re/set then report this evening

Re: needle lift sensor wires
re/set belt timing with the old belt just for test purposes and it runs as it should, very strange as im sure it seemed intermittent,
now to strip it all down and fit new, cam belt kit, water pump, antifreeze, cam and crank seals, aux auto tensioner, idler and drive belt,
