Inner Track Rod size

Post by cc101 »

Hi all, I need to replace the offside inner track rod, carparts4less sell two sizes, 296mm and 330mm. Does anyone know what a 94 td xantia size is? Would the 330 be for a v6 poss?

Cheers all.

I don't have the right answer to the question you ask, but here is a gratuitous picture from service citroen.

I have a 1.9td 1994 so this is what comes up when I put my VIN number in for the steering rack components.

The inner track rod is No 1, and its price is £30.12 inc VAT. My access to facilities on the site doesn't give any details about the length of the rod.

I have just noticed that your car is a sinker. Mine isn't. I put the VIN number in for my previous L-Reg sinker, and the steering inner track rod has the same part no.

I think its the smaller size. I know the track rod end is the smaller thread M14 (I think) but I cant be 100% sure... Try measuring the rod length roughly ...

Hi chris,

I changed both my inner track rods on my 94 TD non sinker on the 19th April and have just measured an (old) identical pair in the garage with another (spare) rack, (I cut the originals to get the boots off). According to my tape measure the rod is approximately 315mm from the inner face (that meets the inner rack face when screwed in) to the end of the hexagonal bar (the track rod end end). With approximately 15mm of thread to screw into the rack, that would make an overall length of 330mm.

Both rods were replaced with items purchased from GSF and these, IIRC, were definitely shorter on the hexagonal portion. However, the only effect this had was that there was more TRE thread visible when correctly tracked.

GSF details as follows:-

New Part No . 435PC0030 Old Part No. N43519 2 [ ] TIE ROD (MRP) 25.10 (Nett) 9.80 Total 19.60 V.A.T. 3.92 Total 23.52

If you put the 435PC0030 number into the GSF search box it itemises it as TIe Rod, that they are 14mm x 1.5 thread at the TRE end and that they are £13.08 each inc. V.A.T. (I always ask for trade discount...If you don't ask, you don't get!!)

Thanks very much Glyn, how did you get on removing the drivers side rod? Cheers, Chris.

Hi Chris,

I took the rack out as, on reading up on the issue I decided that it was the easier method. I found a good blow by blow account on here somewhere and copied and pasted the details into a word document. I then printed it off so that I could work from it in the garage. I can't remember who wrote the original but it was spot on. Here it is:-

1. Level park car, crack wheel bolts on front, keep running
2. Jack up, place chassis stands under rear set of front subframe bolts
3. Drop suspension to minimum, open bleeder screw, chock rear wheels
4. Set steering wheel straight ahead and tape in place generously, stop engine
5. Remove road wheels, bottom nut of drop links and tease rack heatshield forward then out
6. Remove felt cover under driver's side dash, exposing relay panel etc.
7. Loosen 13mm bolt on splined clamp of steering column
8. Through offside wheel arch, remove 6mm socket headed cap screw of steering column lower splined clamp
9. Carefully push column lower section up and free of splines; turn inside and out of the way
10. Detach and plug middle thick return hose at LHM reservoir
11. Pop dogbone off anti-roll bar with a flat bladed screwdriver
12. Remove rear bolt for both sides lower control arm, and ARB bushing caps
13. Tilt anti-roll bar down to vertical
14. Remove final two bolts from offside lower control arm and prise outwards, leaving balljoint tight
15. Rotate lower control arm towards front of car
16. Detach and plug main hydraulic return hose from pinion valve's outlet tube
17. Detach leak back line from ram collar
18. Loosen and remove 11mm headed flare nut from infeed line
19. Detach infeed line from clips across front of subframe central tie member and tuck line aside
20. Loosen and remove 18mm nuts from steering outer balljoints
21. Free outer steering balljoints from hub carriers
22. Remove steering rack mount bolts, captive washers and shims
23. Tilt whole rack towards front of car, and carefully ease out the offside

Once off you can strip the rack and clean/service it before fitting the new rods. I did find that the short rubber cover that you need to carefully prise off the nearside inner rod was a loose fit on the new rod (i.e. didn't grip like the old one) and having it on the bench made it a lot easier to remove the gaiters. I also fitted 2 new track rod ends as a matter of course...

1 month on and the rack is still clean and dry...

Ive also managed to remove the arm by putting the steering on full lock so the arm is out as far as possible. Peeled the boot back and used a pair of mole grips on the joint house just about and cracked the joint that way... then unscrewed and swapped them and then used the grips to nip it back up after..

Its a bit tight for the grips but just manageable.. three times now on either sides ive done..

Well I can happily say that the inner track rod took no more than 10 mins to remove, got a nice big set of stilsons on it and out it came! The droplink took longer to remove as I had to cut the bolt off!

The inner track rod was 330mm,

Chris.
