back break rubbing making nioses xantia

Post by jacksun1987 »

I know my front breaks are rubbish. Because they are near the limit and the light kept coming on. So i put some tape over the wire to stop the light from coming on lol.
But when i break now. Im sure the back breaks are rubbing. Sort of like a granding sound. Then when i take my fot off the break. The sounds is still there for a couple of seconds then goes

Get it off the road and get your brakes fixed now. There's other people on the road as well as you. Jesus wept.

What he said ^

The pads are most likely worn down to the backing plate and your disks will be ruined very quickly if not already.

On the other hand it could be a bit of grit caught in the centre channel but you need to examine the brakes ASAP before more damage occurs or you have an accident.

Its not the pads or the back break. Its the piston. What operates the brake callipers on the front left. Whats not going back in.

It could be worth checking the handbrake cables at the point where they pass through the loop guide on the hub. This is where they can wear, and if the cable has worn, then it will let water in, and this can cause the cable to rust, and then bind. I had this happen on Gracie, to the point where the NSF brake started to smoke.

The pads are all right. Plenty on them. This disks might need changing. 17.5 mm or inches what ever it is. The min is 18.4 something like that. Just this piston for break calliper. Not going back in straight away. Can hear it when i start breaking. Then a couple of seconds after breaking

Jackson, It's likely the back brakes are suffering the usual problem of corrosion sending them off at an angle. Plenty of threads on here speaking of rear caliper corrosion and the horrendous job it can be to fix it..

But please get your fronts done too.. Brakes are an essential safety feature.

So its the back ones what a causing the problem. To the front ones. At first thought i did think the noise was coming from the rear.
We copper grease most the components. Put them back together. Tried the break. with the engine running. took the foot off the break. Then moved the wheel didn't move. Then we had another go. Putting the breaks back on. Tried the foot break again.Took the foot off the break And we could move it slightly.
Thought we manged to solve the problem. Drove it back home. Still grinding
So how can the back breaks affect The piston for the front breaks. ?

I would now definitely check those handbrake cables. If either cable has seized it is likely to have done so when the handbrake was on, and isn't releasing the calliper properly (if at all).

As CitroJim mentioned, there is a known problem with the rear brake callipers being force out of true by a corrosion issue. It is covered in the following post;

What Xantia have you got? It is possible to get refurbishment kits for the brakes (both front and rear), but there are differences depending on whether it is a hatchback or an estate, and also the engine size.
