C4 Picasso cooling fan

Post by RichardW »

C4 has been making a strange noise for the last few days - thought it was the front pads which need doing sooner or later, but then it was doing it stationary. First thoughts were gearbox or clutch  but then I realised it was a) independent of engine and road speed and b) it was doing it when stationary. After a few moments twigged it was probably the cooling fan - switched off he AC and sure enough noise stopped 8-) Looks surprisingly easy to get out, and a new one is not disastrous at £117 - but any chance it can be dismantled and lubed? Oh no, thought not, sealed for life

Joining the ranks of those with noisy radiator fans Richard ? :-D

What sort of noise is it ? I suspect the kind of noise it makes will have a bearing (ha ha) on whether its fixable or needs replacing.

Mine seem to be behaving themselves for now, its only when everything is really stinking hot that they makes any noise, and they've only done it once since I last visited. If I could get some grease into the bearings they might not be too far gone...

Oh, you know, he sort of noise that makes you think the gearbox is about the fall out, sets your teeth on edge, and makes you reach for the ear plugs  I think Addo posted about the rear bush on the Xantia fan spinning in its housing - it's that sort of noise, so I suspect it will have to be replaced #-o

Got it out this evening, there is just enough room to squeeze it out without having to remove the bonnet catch (the secondary release cuts right across the nice big space that it might otherwise come out of  ). Motor is as expected sealed - it's all crimped together. It sounds like the back bearing is the noisy one, to which there is of course no access. I took the fan off and put a few drops of oil on the front bearing, more in hope than anything, and it does seem to have quietened down a bit, but I suspect that is wishful thinking. Will see how it goes for a couple of days, but I suspect a call to the pain dealer will be in order next week....

That's rather disappointing... it makes you wonder what manufacturers have to gain by making items sealed and unserviceable that could just as easily have been serviceable. Throw away society gone made... :x

What have they to gain? Us buying new ones, and it probably knocks 5p off the production costs..... Thinking about, it will almost certainly be possible to grind the crimps off, and pull it apart, and then tack the top back on with the MIG afterwards - I wouldn't try this without having either a standbay available or a few days leeway in not needing the car, but that rarely happens! Will see what SWMBO says about the noise later to decide whether I order a new one just yet or not. If I have to fit a new one, the old one will be having an investigation for sure!

Ended up buying a new one which has quietened things down nicely. I've still got the old one in the garage, if I get half an hour, I'll autopsy it with Mr A Grinder and see if it can repaired :)

So there's no chance of getting any grease in the bearings without A Grinder then ? :) Mine have behaved themselves lately but its only a matter of time I suspect.
