Xantia - beer smell

Post by Jaf »

Hi guys. Thought I was losing my mind the other day when I put the cold air blower on and smelt beer! Happened again yesterday...very strange. I do get the curry smell if the blower's on hot so now I've got the set!

Possibly yeast living on the leaked coolant?

I have heard that they brew some strange beer in Spain. Not tried a curry flavoured brew yet, but I have done it with other herbs, and no, not THAT variety. [-X [-X

Can of Stella lost behind the dash?

But yes, leaky matrix and most likely yeast... Yeast live on all kinds of things...

It seems that you'll need lots of cold beer if your Xantia has developed a heater matrix leak :(
If it's not very bad you can stop it with some good product like Forte Stop Leak or similar.

Make a search in forum with words "Heater matrix".

Heater matrix isn't that bad a job, it's just long winded.

Doesn't that depend on whether the screen is bonded to the fascia?

I've been driving with the faint whiff of coolant for 3 years now.

Fascia?

The scuttle panel must be bonded to the windscreen otherwise you tend to get wet feet when it rains.
Use a long bladed stanley knife (one of those extendable ones) to gently slice through the old sealant.
Make sure you have a tube of black silicon sealant to use when putting it all back together.

Yeast?! Wierd. Anyways have had the matrix leak for 3 years, only lose a drop, will fix it when it gets worse.

Cheers (ha ha)

Jaf, if you can get it I would recommend that you put a bottle of Forte Radiator Stop Leak in your cooling system to defer the collapse of the matrix for as long as possible.

Mine exploded and filled the car with boiling coolant. No fun at all as we were just about to leave on a 600 mile journey.
