Brake Pedal Kick Back

Post by Gregg1100 »

Just getting the car ready for MOT- only done 2 miles since last one- and I noticed that when I pressed the brake pedal, it seemed to slightly kick back at me. The pedal mod was done years ago, It was the same last year and it passed.
Just wondered if it was because disks have got a light coating of rust on them, and the pads bouncing off the rust, which goes straight after a few applications.

Does it do it just as you are coming to a stop? Most likely one (or both) of the front ABS rings has broken, and the additional gap is confusing the ABS ECU. you can fit a new ring, it's not too hard (you just need to separate the bottom ball joint, and undo the hub nut.... )

Would the really firm hard brake pedal have something to do with a weak accumulator sphere, perhaps ??

I had the 406 off the road for 6 weeks and found a bit of judder through the pedal when I got it running again. A few miles and hard stops has cleared that, I put it down to corrosion on the discs needing scrubbed off.

Nope. A firm hard brake pedal is exactly what you'd expect if you've done the brake pedal mod as you say you have - eg removing the spring from the plastic tube on the back of the pedal arm and replacing it with some solid tubing...that's how a Citroen brake pedal should feel when it doesn't have a stupid spring messing it up to make it feel mushy for drivers used to other marques !

If the brake pedal gives a small kick back when you're stationary and press the pedal it will be air in the brake lines as citronut suggests, probably the rear ones. I've seen those exact symptoms before where you press the pedal slightly and after a slight delay it gives a little kick back - bleeding the rear brake lines fixed it.

If you get a lot of "air" out of the rear brake lines and the rear suspension spheres are still ok you probably have a failed/punctured anti-sink sphere which is dribbling a stream of nitrogen bubbles out into the system - in this case you'll find that you keep needing to bleed the rear brakes every few weeks until the anti-sink sphere is replaced.

If the kick back is more like pulsing and only happens just as you come to a stop it will be a problem with one of the ABS sensors as Richard suggested. I've seen this problem too. To eliminate this as a possibility try removing the ABS fuse and see if the problem still persists. If it does it won't be the ABS!

Car passed MOT- just. Tester had to stand on brake pedal to test rear brakes, but just made the grade.
Took n/s/r wheel off today and found the growing syndrome on caliper to radius arm surface. The pads were seized in caliper too. All clean now with only 1 back plate bolt snapped. :-D The caliper came apart, so have to get square section sealing ring and a pad cover plate. Oh, and 2 new discs and set of pads plus a shed load of LHM fluid. :( .
I will do the other side asap. I will change front brake hoses as well.
While this is going on. the main bedroom is being decorated, my Kawasaki EN 500 bike has shed it's generator rotor magnets-- smashed to f*** and back( this part to be nicked from my spare GPz 500) Happy days, lol.

Next year, put some ballast in the boot; that will help the rear brakes a lot. :)

And you can stop the caliper coming apart by replacing the small through-bolt that locates the pads after the pads have been removed.

Greg, delighted the car passed the MOT :-D

My Activa, spring mod done, kicks back a little when she's not been used for a bit or when just started. It soon clears..

Thanks for the feedback. Going to Lookers tomorrow to get the bits, and local factors for the discs.
One thing, - I can get on the Cit Service site, can find the pages with the bits I need showing, can put them in the basket--- how how you get site to show prices please.?
I have got the prices up on screen before, but that was pure fluke. :-D

once the part No.'s you require price's for are in the box on the right hand side of the screen, click on each of them once, then go straight to the basket icon top right of the screen, click this once which brings up a form, ignore that and click the back arrow once then click the basket once again, this will bring up the price and part No.'s

(you dont need to touch the pop up box that come up on the screen when you click the part No.'s ) unless you want to alter the quantity of any of the parts selected,

i make a habit of ticking the tick box's by each price result then delete them all, just in case they get ordered and sent to my local dealer i registered to when i set up my S/C account

Sounds complex Malc....

I just click on the trolley icon at the right above the list of parts, after I have added the items, then when the next window opens, click on the third icon along, which looks like a basket with an arrow over it, and then voila the list appears with prices. Sometimes it has a fit, and goes to a different window, but that can usually be rectified by going back and forwards again - sometimes you have to log out.
