Xantia steering column top bearing

Post by davewithington »

I've got a bit of play in the top bearing on my steering column.

On the Xantia, does replacement mean I have to change the entire assembly? I can't see a bearing on Citroen service.

Did it fail an MOT ? Is it excessive play that would affect control of the steering while driving ?

If not I wouldn't worry about it too much... both my Xantia's have had a bit of slack in the top steering column bearing, unless you deliberately try to rock it up and down you would never notice! (on mine anyway)

I had a TD in that did this once, However, I found that the top bearing had come upwards a bit, allowing for the play. I pressed it down with two big screw drivers and it went nice and tight again! Might be worth the check..

It's not a huge amount, and probably not enough to fail the MOT, but I can feel it through the wheel.

I'll have the steering wheel off to have a look.

If the play is too bad and the MOT man sucks his teeth Dave then it will be a case of renewing the whole Shebang as the top bearing is not renewable. It's kind of pressed in and the top of the outer column crimped over the top of it..

I'm sure if push come to shove that Mr. lathe and some Nylon66 could make a substitute...
