c5 mot fail

Post by jgra1 »

chaps, my (new) landladies car failed a halfords! mot test today.

3 items

nearside front suspension pipe leak
Rear (rear connecting block) fluid suspension pipe leak.
Exhaust emits an excessive level of metered smoke for a turbo charged engine

do the pipe leaks sound like a major PITA ? I have never looked under a c5 nor touched one..
the exhaust, the average reading from the smoke test is 4.28 m-1 I think, hard to read it clearly..
do these HDi's need a tunisian tune up like old school diesels?

any thoughts appreciated, although i realise it's a get your head stuck under the car situation really..

If your car doesn't have a dpf, then a "Tunisian tune up" is the way to go:)
I would give it an engine service , just to help, but a reading of over 4 means they are just getting soot out of the exhaust.
As for the leaks, they could be a bit involved if you are not sure what your doing. If the leaks are only slight, ie weeping, I would recommend cleaning the affected areas with a spray of Jizer and a pressure washer. If the leak is not apparent at time of test, it can't fail. You can then keep an eye on it to see how much leaks out.

If it's like mine, the leak may not be from the connecting block, but an accumulation inside the aluminium cross member on which it's mounted, seeping past the bolts. What I don't yet know is how the fluid got inside the cross member - years of missing from the breathers, or leakage from the return pipes which run inside it?

The front suspension leak may just be a split leak off hose.

thanks all, sorry didnt respond earlier..

well somehow half""ds passed it yesterday, I dont know what if anything they did and how much it cost..
but, she drove away from them and lost the throttle..
they got the car back - i am guessing using idle speed - and I believe changed the throttle unit .. (I need to confirm this)
anyway, no difference.. car still has no throttle and their electricion is not due till Weds..!!
I dont have a lexia but want to help...

any thoughts on what could have gone wrong, to give no throttle? I am assuming halfords would know a snapped cable but,..,

;)

It may be drive by wire, unless a fairly early car. I've seen one only faulty motorised throttle body, it illuminated the "K" light as the voltages required to steady its low revs were out of spec.

Sure it's not a blocked exhaust?

The other things to cripple it would be stuff like fuel delivery/pressure.

hmm..
it was driving fine, I told her to rev it somewhat on the way to the test.. probably the first time the car has seen full throttle.! ;)
then 4 blocks from the mot and nothing,, just idleing speed..

dunno., ;)

I don't think it is likely to be the MAF sensor. If it idles but is utterly gutless then what about a massive loss of manifold pressure?

well, it's the 12th.. the car went for the mot at halfords 1 week ago and has not ran since.
the latest update from my landlady (colombian)

Something to do with the wire fly system.
A friend spoke to the garage for me.
If they can repaired it it will be okey but if they have to get a new one it will be hundreds of £!!

I want to help, it's not worth spending hundreds on a 10 year old C5 Hdi.. grr feel a bit helpless.. car is stuck about 10 miles away.. and I am lexialess..

Doesn't sound right. Can't get it flatbedded to work or your house?

First thing I check on anything newer than a Xantia is the underbonnet relay panel - swap with a known working unit. This test takes about ten minutes.

Also worth checking the timing belt. Does it cough into life with a squirt of ether?
