C5 2.2 HDI SX 2001, Speedometer.

Post by RussBristol »

Hello, After a bit of advice again.
I have a Citroen C5 2001 SX,
A couple of weeks ago the speedometer started getting irratic, jumping to different speeds, then two days later it packed in altogether, the tacho/mileometer and trip is still working as is all the other dash instruments. Before I start investigating does anyone know what it could be, is there a common problem like drive from the gearbox??
Would apprieate any help but I know its impossible to tell me exactly what it is, thanks

The two most usual faults are low battery voltage or a faulty stepper motor for the speedo.

Have been there in the past too.

Almost certainly the stepper motor i would say.Easy enough to take instrument cluster out and either change the stepper there and then or just swap it out with the one from the rev counter until you can get hold of another one.

If someone like me thinks its easy it really must be :)

Thanks for the advice, I swapped the stepper motor for the rev counter and it worked. For anyone about to do the same, the white plastic pins are extremely easy to break, however I broke a few but the connections have stayed together OK, if I was going to do it again I would be a lot more careful.
I found the best way to calibrate it was to leave the unit out and get on a nice quite road with a sat nav, so you can pull in now and again to adjust.
