Saxo Strut tops

Post by jmd »

Has anybody carried out this job, or can the tops & bearings be replaced (on the car) without removing the whole suspension unit

It's easy, and i suppose you could in theory leave the strut on the car but it's sooo easy to just remove the leg.

the only way to do this is with the strut off the car as it will make compressing the coil spring far easier

And safer too, would not want fingers in the way between inner wing top and strut even if compressed...

They are quite 'long' springs when uncompressed although you'd not really need to uncompress them to see that. Remember its the "whole" strut assembly as it does not separate from the hub on these.

The only extra you may want is a bottom balljoint pinchbolt / nut as I find these sometimes like to snap when being undone, probably previously over-torqued or possibly just age. I used to keep a couple in my toolbox (and there's at least one if not two there now)

Quite straightforward to do, although I still have an occasional knock from mine (decided its rack related but that's something else, not much else left to change)

Mine were re-used by the previous owner :( , Although I'd agree to replace them. I've seen before where someone peened just one half down, figuring that the 'next' time they would be put back they would use the 'other' one instead.

I have obtained some new ones out of worry but not fitted them yet, I hammered the peening down a bit more but that may of weakened it actually.

I see there are two types as well changing a build code, at least its easy to tell as the later ones are a lot "longer" , earlier ones look like 205 ones.

it it usually possible to re/use them once by swaping one side for the other ( not always though )
you can also if you are really stuck file the matting surface of the nut down so the peening zone is at a fresh point, as the nut will wind on a bit more dependent on how much you file
