As soon as i posted i realised that it may have been helpful to actually take a pic of the actual pin in the fusebox but totally slipped my mind.

At least i know now what the problem is for definate and as such can concentrate on getting it sorted.Relieved it's not the actual pump (quoted £193.62 from citroen) and they also said i might need a control module (00006680L0) at £66.56

My skills on car electrics aren't legendary so more inclined to go with an auto electrician assuming the pin in the actual fuse box is ok.Will check in morning when light again.

Will let you know how i get on.....many thanks again.

Update.........

Thanks to all the advice from here the problem is now sorted. :)

As suggested it was indeed pin 11 at fault.Managed to get local dealer to get them in and got a local auto electrician to swap it out.Starts first time, every time and running great again.Amazing how a 54p item can cause so much trouble.Already replaced the battery and transponder aerial only for it to be a tiny teminal..oh well, had to buy a bag of 10 so got some spares if anyone ever needs some!

Wheeler, just for future reference the part number you supplied has now apparently been superceeded. 6542TV is now 6541 E6 so citroen tell me.Once again, thanks for your input.

Excellent news. :) It's amazing how often a seemingly tricky problem turns out to be something simple like a burnt connector. There's a lot of truth to the old saying, always check the basics first!

Hi ej,

The first time round (original post) I got a chap in Bilston to sort it out but it recently burnt out again and this time I had to go to Aldridge to find someone who was willing to do such a small job as most of the bigger places round here like Corfield said they hadn't got the tools to get it out.I suspect it was just there wasn't enough money in it for them.

The second time it went it had also burnt and melted some of the plastic on the actual multi plug so will need replacing at some point but have managed for now to change the pin and it seems fine.I also managed to track down on ebay the actual fuseboard itself as the post was discoloured and burnt too and swapped that to be on the safe side.Pretty cheap and easy even for me.

Hope this helps.

If it keeps burning out, then I would be tempted to fit a helper relay to take the load off the fuse box. Cut the wire above the fuse box, and use this as the switching side, run in a new high current (fused!) feed direct off the battery.

I don think this is the same problem as yours as you say the fuel pump in the tank is operating, when pin 11 of the grey connector burns out it just stops the fuel pump operating.
It may not operate every time you switch the ignition on but it should always have power going to it whenever you try to start the engine.
to rule it out when the car does not start give a 12v supply to the pump & see if it starts.
