Which engine oil?

Post by MonkeyMark »

Silly question, but which engine oil should i use on a C8 2.0Hdi (2003)? It has about 80k miles if that makes a difference.

Dont want to break it just yet! :-D

Cheers, Mark

Assuming it does not have a DPF, which I dont think it has then Total Quartz 9000 5W-40, is I believe the stuff recommended by citroen. I use it in my c5 with the same engine (8v?). If you do have a DPF then in theory you need a low saps oil, like Total ecs 5W-30, Sam

That is exactly what is use, 9000 for non DPF and ECS for with DPF.

Odd, my Service Manual (albeit is in German), but states that the 5W-30 is NOT for HDis with particle filter.

Is that for the Total ECS oil Ben82?

If I remember correctly the Total ECS was designed for Peugeot/Citroen engines with DPF's ...

Interestingly my local Citroen dealers only stock the very basic Total oil and that is all they put in every car on a service. Hmm, I did try and correct them but I left thinking that I know more than they do

Too expensive to use the ECS oil apparently ...

Don't think so actually.. it's Quartz Futur 9000 5W-30 and Quartz Futur Diesel 9000 5W-30 (guessing they mean Future)
They don't list any others, but both are the only 5W-30 ones they list. :)

Thanks for the help. Not sure if it has a dpf but think it may be the 16 valve engine.

What's the best way to check?

To check for DPF have a look underneath at the exhaust - if it's got a large cat with pipes going to it, it's got a DPF. Alternatively post up the last 8 digits of your VIN and we can check on service.citroen.

Handbook for our C4GP says ECS oil OK for DPF - it says not to use Activa energy 9000 or Quartz Energy 9000 in DPF engines. Says you can use 5W/30, 5W/40 or 10W/40 in the 1.6 HDi, depending on operating temp range.

You can check on the Total website for their version of the correct oil for your car.....
