Dogbone keeps popping off

Post by Timmy69 »

Hi Guys
As you know i have had a few problems with an height issue with the Xantia.I thought this had been sorted when i put a new Dogbone on.The new problem is that it keeps popping off on one side:(.The side it comes off is not the tightest of fits but i thought it was enough to hold it.Will i have to buy a new or recon unit or have any of you guys got any idea's of a more permanent fix. Also how much roughly is the new part gonna cost me ?..Any help appreciated as usual.

Thanks
Timmy

I guess it drops off the one side that faces downwards ? And on the height corrector cradle.. if it is then what I have done if the linkages are nice and free and not siezed is drill a mynute small hole through the dogbone and into the tip of the nipple on the linkage and then screw a small small self tapper through the dogbone and into the nipple.. this should then hold it on..

What has happend over time the nipple has got wet and rusted which has resulted in a worn or smaller head which is too small for the dogbone to snap onto snugley.. hence the falling off..

If however the actual levers are sized up then replace the whole height corrector cradle with a better one that's not siezed and has a good nipple to snap onto..

Hi
Thanks for that...it is the cradle side like you said, the rest of the mechanism seems really new considering its a 13 year old car,in your opinion would i still be better removing the cradle to drill the dogbone etc ?

Depends how good you are with a drill.. should be able to do it in situ with high enough ramps...

firstly do not do any of the above until you make absolutely 100% sure the linkage/turrets are floppy free, the only way to do this is with the cradle removed from the car, leave the height corrector attached to the pipe/car,

also for the cost of a new doggy bone ( 2 or 3 quid ) its also worth buying one to try after freeing off the linkage's/turrets

Oh I'm sorry malcolm.. Did I not say make sure they are nice and free first.. Prehaps I should of put it in bold.....

Do you really thinkk iI would advise someone without telling them to be sure linkages are free... [-X

In case it hasn't been mentioned, make sure the turrets are free to move before replacing the dog bone

Oh and use axle stands so the car can't sink down and squish you.

So if i am crap with a drill...can i not secure it with a cable tie or some other similar method...it doesn't look as if it is something that moves a lot..Just a thought :)

Timmy
I always use axle stands btw :)

It DOES or should move a lot if your rear spheres are good and the levers are free, so no, not really....

try a new doggy bone before you fiddle with what you have, at that price it aint worth spending lots of time trying to make do and mend/bodge,

I think he already has as in his first post he said his new dog gone keeps falling off.. It's amazing that a nylon link can cause wear to a metal stub.. But I think it is definitely to do with it getting wet and rusting and the link wearing the rust away...

sorry Paul i missed that bit,

also nylon wearing metal away is not surprising, many a time i have seem metal pipes worn through were a rubber hose has been chaffing against them

Well it might have to wait because i don't have a small drill..only got a large hammer drill which is way to big to drill something so small :(...So nothing else but replacement or drilling ?
