Help! top timing belt cover 2.0. Hdi 8 valve

Post by Peter.N. »

I am trying to get the timing covers off my C5, I have got out all the bolts I can see or feel but it still seems fixed in the area of the bottom of the inlet manifold, I have felt all round there and looked with a mirror but I can't see another fixing, there is a slide type moulding in the cover at the back where My Haynes indicates there is another bolt but I cant see or feel one - can anyone help - please.

Oooerrr... There is one there Peter.. 110bhp arent they?? Have you got the top mount off?? Roll the engine forward a bit for more room.

The rear one HAS to come off before the front one on the pump comes away

Theres a Top screw next to the Cam sensor, one down the side next to the TOP mount, theres another that you get from in the wheel arch too peter.. I think it doubles as one of the Water pump bolts... that could be the one stopping it..

Lower the engine on the jack and look in the arch.. Im sure now thats your hold up..

Here Peter, I copied the picture to Desktop then into paint, then uploaded it to photo bucket, and then here...

Image

Thats an actual C5 parts list, not a Xantia one, but shows all the fixings...

Ive a feeling screw 71 needs slackening as I think it clips the upper cover on a C fixing not a hole fixing..

Hi Paul

I thought you would know, screw 70 by the plastic moulding must be the one but I'm blowed if I can find it. I have had it jacked right up and lowered right down, the engine comes fairly well forward when its lowered and I have looked with a mirror and felt all the way down but I am obviously missing it for some reason, I will have another go tommorrow, got frozen out there today. I think I have got the rest of bolts out as the other covers are loose.

Thanks

Peter

Don't think you can see it Peter - IIRC it's on an 'extension' to the cover (similar to the top bolt) on the engine side, with a web top and bottom. You can reach round the side of the engine and get a finger on it - it's much easier to spin it out if you've got a ratchet spanner.

Hi Richard

I have a ratchet spanner if I can find something to put it on :? I'm not surprised I can't see it but I can't feel it either, will try it again tommorrow without the rubber gloves!

Well I found it today, thanks Paul and Richard for the info. The sun was shining right into the engine compartment and I could just see it, but its so far away from the cover it doesn't look as though it belongs to it.

The next problem was getting the pulley off the HP diesel pump, I made up an extractor from an old starter bendix spring compressor .. so we are on the way now.
