Brake squeak

Post by froggy »

Hi, my 1997 Xantia TD. I changed rear pads before Christmas, now, when I depress the brake pedal the brakes squeal , but only as I first touch the pedal, after a second or two the squeak stops, any body got any ideas why? under continual braking the brakes are quiet. cheers Terry. #-o

Have you dealt with the corrosion between callipers and swinging arms? If not, the inside edge of the calliper slot is rubbing on the disc.

Sounds as though its the slight roughness of the overnight rust on the discs; first time you use the brakes, the rust gets rubbed off - until the next day.
Were there any anti-squeal shims and what state were they in? If they were flaking badly, I'd fit a new set.
Try cleaning and greasing (very lightly with copper-eaze) the 'platforms' in the callipers on which the edges of the pads sit - ditto contacts patches on shims, pads and pistons.

Yes I cleaned up the trailing arm and caliper. Iam not sure what the shims look like, sorry for sounding thick! I guess that I need to replace them and grease the area where the pad sits? cheers Terry.

were there lips on the edge's of the disc's, if so remove the pads and slightly bevel the edges of each pad off with an angle grinder, this alows the main area of the pad to sit flat against the working surface of the disc,

Angle grinder ? Pad friction material is pretty soft. Rubbing the corners at 45 degrees on some smooth concrete is all that's needed...

that depends on how deep the lip on the disc is to how much you need to bevel off the pads, and how heavy handed your grinder is,
might require /\  :-D
